How would you feel? Article in comments.

That's horrible. In the UK school lunches are free until the age of 7. But I doubt they would do this if our accounts were low.

I think this mother was TRYING to go viral. The stamp means the parent needs to add to the account, it happens all the time, money doesn't last forever. The stamp is not a label "this kid and his family are poor" sure it may be a little embarrassing but I think they're making it much more than it needs to be.

At my elementary school, if you didn't have enough money for lunch you got crackers and a juice box and you had to eat in the office. It was humiliating.. I probably would have been embarrassed too if I was the kid.

I wouldn't be embarrassed as a kid. As a teen, yeah.

I remember my first day of sophomore year in high school. I got my lunch, went to check out. After paying for the lunch, I went negative 5 cents. She threw my lunch in the trash, and I didn't eat that day. I never went negative and had unpaid balances. It was the first day of school. I was so embarrassed I couldn't even tell my DH (BF then) about it. He thought I wasn't hungry and felt so bad when I told him later... I think that is bull. Not letting a person eat over a nickel.

And I need a list of peoples names that think others who can't afford food or basic health care don't deserve it because we're poor....

I need a list of all the stuff ppl think should be free and paid by the gov. Or tax payer.

I don't see an issue. They used to put stamps on our wrist so when I got home my mom would see it. Kids forget about notes. Why is a kid so young embarrassed about money or free lunch? I feel like that's way too young to have that mentality

Sad.. growing up my school lunch was free but I never ate it because it was disgusting ?. In high school lunches got way better (still free) but didn't really eat that either because I'd always would cut school right before lol.

I always paid for my husband's lunches in high school. His parents would always forget to send him money to school and I always felt bad that they would forget.

Our school wouldn't let you graduate if you had unpaid lunch debt.

@mrsjackson

Yes, the point being that saying "he had 75 cents on the account" is immaterial, since lunch costs more than 75 cents.

I fail to see how a stamp to remind the parent to send lunch money is humiliating. Kids run out of lunch money all the time, it doesn't mean anything other than, "oops, time to add more money to the lunch account."

Raise awareness? Well, the stamp was to raise mom's awareness that her kid didn't have food money. ?

Oh for Pete's sake. It was a reminder the account was getting low. Kids lose paper notices & parents don't get them. Then the account goes negative and a LOT of parents don't pay. In one school I worked in we had over $19,000 in unpaid lunches by the end of the year.

Its ok for her to post the photo to raise awareness to the fact that kids without enough money are being publicly humiliated. No, the .75 cents wasn't enough, were you trying to make a point with that orrrr?

Нравится Ответить

I don't see the big deal. And the 75 cents that was left on the account was probably not enough to cover the lunch.

So it was wrong for them to give him a stamp, but it's ok that she took a photo and posted it when she clearly says her son "didn't want me to take a picture"? ??‍♀️

It said he had enough money and there was even 75 cents remaining. The kid wasn't asked permission or if he wanted a note and was extremely upset over it. This is not okay.

Lol my friends did not, which made it oddI still remember explaining... I was in 5th grade. Even I was like "uhhhhh its money for food only".

I have got many childhood humiliating stories. Brutal.??

@big Thats why school lunches should be free everywhere. They are in my city.

@ice I used to go to the corner store with foodstamps too but my friends all knew what they were ?

Нравится Ответить

How about going to the store with school friends and paying with food stamps?

Now that was humiliating. Especially trying to explain what that weird "monopoly" cash was for. ?then having friends look at you like you were a charity case?

How is stuff like this being viral? Strange they would use a stamp

No his mom didnt give him lunch money, she wants her kid to not be stamped, give him lunch money or brown bag it. If the kid lost a note the mom would have blamed the school for that too. Schools carry actual lunch money debt that parents dont pay, because the school is too pc to not give a kid lunch because his parents didnt give them money for it.

Yeah I'm mixed on this one. They probably stamped it so he wouldn't forget and his parents would see it. Then again, he was probably embarrassed to walk around being branded as someone who didn't have enough money to pay for lunch.

That's horrible ?

I remember when I was younger and money would run out of my account the lunch lady would take my tray of food and throw me a cheese sandwich and a carton of milk. I was so humiliated because all the kids know that was the free lunch you get when you don't have money on your lunch account.

I think school lunches should be completely free.
