Security officer & pregnant

Security officer & pregnant

Okay this is a long shot considering how specific it is, but I am super stressed because I am 9 weeks pregnant right now and I work as a security officer. Where I work varies every week and can range from high rises to outdoor sites. I have to deal with the sometimes mentally ill homeless population and work in more dangerous areas. Anyways, does anyone have any experience with this kind of situation? Am I allowed to say I can't work in dangerous areas anymore? I am open to hearing from police officers as well. It's the closest and more common job I can think of. I am also hoping to hear some advice about uniforms or anything relating to this topic.

My cousin says they put pregnant women police officers on light duty. So they do mostly desk work and such.

You might wanna ask your supervisor if there are options for you. Or contact your HR department.

I was a security officer for the first 6.5mos I was pregnant. I worked in a high rise but also had to go to the parking garage where we would get homeless ppl sometimes.

My advice, use common sense. Don't put yourself in a dangerous situation. If you aren't sure don't go/do it. The farther along I got the less I did as far as dealing with our homeless guys. As long as I was physically capable of doing something, I did it. Even helped the police restrain and arrest an irate man that was in one of the businesses.

Talk to your supervisor or HR though. They would have more specific information for you.

Like pp said you should speak with HR. Also it's important that you don't just come in dictating terms 'because your pregnant' as they will probably have policy for this and will work within your capabilities.

Any special deviation would be at your doctors request and should be reasonable, not asking them to write you off because you don't want to do what you are physically able.

I'm not saying you are at all, but I manage a clinic and so many women (fit, healthy and perfectly able to be working, just pregnant) asking our doctors to sign off that they are medically unfit to work.

I work in HR for a major Security company; you could ask for a different post but pay and hours could change or get a doctor's note outlining what you can and can't do. In the way of uniforms we have maternity uniforms.

Thanks for the replies! I would never just ask for a doctors note to get out of working. I want to work as much as I can. I'm really hoping my company has maternity clothes because wearing a tent is not something I want to do. Wearing an uncomfortable uniform is annoying enough lol. Anyone's security company have paid maternity leave? I think I'm screwed on that one. ?

Ours is unpaid leave but our officers don't get paid leave at all, only anniversary checks.

As far as uniforms my company didn't have any. So I got regular maternity pants the same color and a maternity dress shirt and they reimbursed me for them. My suit jacket was fine the entire time bc I didn't have to button it.
