Lip tie I only make kids with lip ties ? My nipples are shredded. Two different lactation…

What is a "lip tie?"

It's a thin piece of skin that connects the upper lip to the gums. Her lip tie is very tight so she can't get her lip in a good position to nurse. My son was the same way, I had one too that was clipped when I was around 10. So I'm not sure if it's better to have it clipped now vs later, I still need to talk to her pediatrician Monday and maybe a specialist in the future.

It's less invasive when they're younger. Dd had one and we didn't get it clipped because it wasn't bad enough to affect her nursing, but if it meant the difference between nursing or ep, I'd personally get it done.

Don't mean to sound ignorant, but have you tried a nipple shield?

Both of my boys TORE ME UP. With the first I quit nursing at 8 weeks, with the second I used a nipple shield from birth to 8 weeks and after that it got better. He definitely has a lip tie, but I think with age he was able to adjust and get better at it.

I'm pretty sure this next baby will give me the same issues.

My second has lip tie. Hasn't been corrected. Breastfeeding took some adjusting, but we did it without a nipple shield.

I would get it fixed now, its a very simple procedure. I've helped do one on a 13ish year old once and even though it wasn't a painful procedure, I imagine it's much easier on a younger child. Also if it meant the difference between breastfeeding and pumping, I'd definitely get it done.

I had mine cut as a teenager, but not really for medical reasons, i just hated the way it looked when i smiled. I had it done by a dentist within a hospital, with just local anaesthetic. All i can say is, it was one of the most painful recoverys i've ever experienced. Trying to drink/eat jelly only caused excrutiating pain..and not being able to smile without it ripping the stitches for days. It wasnt really a thing(27 years ago),to cut it from babies here so if you can get that done now and it be pain free for them,go for it,especially if they can then breastfeed easier xx

@five one of the lactation consultants said the same thing. They said it's done by laser as well. @kay opinions are always welcome. lol I do agree, with what I've heard so far, earlier sounds better. The nipple shield does help but right now my nipples are bad, really bad. The pump is the only thing I can use without almost crying. Once I heal a bit I'll try with a shield more.

I totally feel for you. With my first, the damage was already done and the shields weren't saving me. I ended up with 3 bouts of mastitis that I honestly think were caused by the open sores.

With my second, I stated using the shield in the hospital. My left side still suffered badly, but I used some a&e ointment and let it air out a few times a day and it healed well.
