What would you do?

If this post gets long,I apologize in advance. My mom just called me to ask me something I've never considered. She wanted to know if I would "hypothetic" want to rent their second house. My sister lives there with her four girls now.

I mean I think you should do it, I would hate to see my parents struggle when all they are trying to do is help their child. I know your sister might be mad but she is irresponsible and needs to learn that she needs to take care of her children and herself before anyone else. Maybe her having to leave the house and go pay more and everything will make her realize she had it so good. I wouldn't turn down the opportunity especially if your parents need help badly.

Oh no your poor parents. If I were in your shoes. I would rent it. I would look after my parents more than a sibling. Don't be afraid that she will get upset with u. She needs to get on her own to feet and let your parents finally be stable again.

Your sister is an adult who took advantage of her parents. Why watch your parents struggle so she continue to do so?

Again I don't want to bash my sister, she really is a good person deep down, but my nieces are already victims. They are always at my mom and dads house. Or house alone while she's out with her current bf. The oldest two are pretty much never house. I wouldn't even consider my niece (19 year old) living there. My mom and dad would probably take in the youngest two full time. T would just move in with her current bf she's already talked about that. But I think it would be different if it wasnt "her" decision to move out. Nobody would be homeless.

It may cause resentment with you sister, but would you rather her be a bit put out? Or your parents losing everything?

As for the house, it's bad. Really bad. The back door is rotten, need all new flooring through out the house. A couple holes in the walls, the deck need to be refinished because you can't walk on it without getting splitters. They somehow broke the molding off of the closet door. The downstairs bathroom needs to be completely gutted. The outside needs repainted as well. It's no joke, it's bad.

I would do it. Your parents could sure use the help and sounds like they deserve it.

We can afford it, we have saved for a down payment on a house. But that savings would go to repairs. The only difference is the house wouldn't be in our name. Dh and I are both very handy. Some things would have to have professionals. But 90% would be able to be done by us. Dh and I are really on the fence about this. And ladies, please don't call my sister names. She really lost herself in the last divorce plus is going through a middle life crisis. I'm by no means justifying her actions, she's in the wrong, but she's still my sister.

Maybe they should sit down with her and just tell her they can no longer continue to help her because of what it's doing to them and either increase her rent or ask her to move. If she decides to move then you could move in and fix the house if that's something you would want to do. Either way, they really need to have a discussion with her.

I was going to suggest buying the house from your parents as well.

I don't think buying is an option. Again, I'm sorry I doesn't really no all the technically things with the bank. They actually just didn't something with the house through the bank within the last year. That's why the payments are only 700. My sister isn't even paying that now. That's why my parents are in such a deep hole, they are paying for their house they live in plus the house my sister is living. I don't think they refinanced it, but I think it was something similar to that. That's why if something happens to the house my dads cars go. I think they put those as collateral or something. I don't think they can sell the house. Again I'm not sure on all the details. I do know if the house gets paid for then it is at 0 risk of being taken.

Do not sink thousands of dollars into a property you don't own. Just don't.

If you can buy the house, then fine.

V, I hope you're right. If that is an option in any way then I would do that for my parents in a heartbeat. Anything to avoid bankruptcy for them. I'm not going to lie, I like my dads cars too much too to see them go ?

I would definitely NOT rent the home.

It's in terrible condition, your parents may go bankrupt and lose it. It's just a bad idea all around.

It's not your responsibility to keep them out of financial trouble. It's your job to keep the family that you've created with your husband out of financial trouble. You would be risking your stability by renting this home. AND you would be spending the down payment money that you've been saving on fixing up a really terrible house (that's not even yours!) rather than buying a lovely one of your own.

It's very kind of you to want to help. But it sounds as if your parents want YOU to do what they've been doing for your sister for years- bail them out. They need to learn that is not the solution for anyone at any point.

We each must take responsibility for our own actions and choices- however well intentioned or poor they may be.

Sounds like you need to buy the house from your parents and move in yourself. Otherwise, don't put any serious money of your own into it; even though it's family, it has a way of not working out. Your parents can kick her out and find a new tenant. They can offer reduced rent for a few months for the new tenant to do certain diy repairs, or they can do the repairs first and up the rent. If they won't evict your sister though, and you don't b u y the house, there's really nothing for you to do.

I would stay out of it. Family and business transactions rarely work out without resentment.
