Do you think it's weird some families make their baby boy wear a gown for their baptism?

When I saw this I thought 'didn't we already do this?' Yep, 2 month old post

Not al all. I wished my son could have been able to wear my husband's gown, but he was way too big. Last minute I had to put him in a little suit instead.

I like it, it represents Royalty, dignity and respect getting in Church life (for me) :)

I don't think so. There's a gown that's been passed down from all of the children in my family to be baptized in, since my grandpa's mom. Boys and girls wear it.

I have paintings and portait of half of my ancestors wearing puffy dresses, big bows and ribbons. Just the fact that I actually exist, show that they didn't get too many "wrong ideas"!

I even have a portrait of my grandpa, wearing a cute "toga" with a bow, and he was the biggest ladie's man ever.

(and by ladie's man I mean a$$ that had so many mistresses, that he even tried to bring some of them along for family vacations)

No. I'm Catholic and it's not weird at all. My grandma made a gown for my mom and it's been is d for 3 generations so far. My son and daughter wore it. My sister and I plan on having our grandkids wear it too.

Nope its tradition. My husband wore a gown when he was baptized. He also wore a long robe or gown when he made his communion as a child. This was in Italy.

I put my boys in white silk suits when they were baptized only because the traditional gown from his family and my family were both in horrible shape. If the gown was in great condition I wouldn't have even thought twice about putting my boys in it. We started a new tradition with the suit and we love it.

Nope, my son got baptised in one, it is tradition. Then, It has been passed down already 3 times. The names of each child that was baptised and date hand stitched onto the gown. I had a more modern suit under it, for after the baptism. It was a linen suit.

Edit: I also don't get upset if ppl think it's weird. Everyone has different cultures, taste and opinions.

No. The gown was typical until late 1900s. Passed down by family. Until gender was capable of being known. Then people went to suits

The baptismal gown was suppose to be showy. Back when men dressed ornate and prettier too

babies wore gowns until potty trained. It was easier access, and less mess. Had nothing to do with gender.

I'm asking because my babyboy will be baptized on the 17th of this month, he will be wearing a gown and some of my friends think it's the weirdest thing ever.

I don't care about them liking it or not, but it got me wondering if most people thought it was weird too!

If it wasn't traditional, it would be strange. But then again, lots of traditions seem strange - chopping down a tree each December, bringing it in your house and decorating it for example!

No. A baptismal gown is traditional. It's not gender specific.

If this baby is a boy then he'll be christened in the family gown. It goes back 5 generations. Would only use it for the ceremony and then change it after. It's tradition for us

Nope. My family is Portuguese. It's tradition. Many mothers turn their wedding dresses into baptism gowns for their baby girls and boys. I had many comments when I chose to put my son in a suit. But at the end of the day I was happy and he looked so cute :)

Personally I find the entire ceremony strange but I don't judge the people who do it, they feel it's important and that's fine. It's not hurting the child and if it gives them peace that their child will be saved then more power to them. Although I definitely would've had no idea that that was a male baby
