In the book, Alison has a twin that switches lives with her. In the TV series, I think this is the case with Jason and Charles.

As for A supposedly being someone we've already seen-- its "Jason". Who is actually Charles. Charles took over Jason's life.

Charles could be A's birth name too. I'm adopted and I was given one name at birth but my parents changed it when they adopted me. (Oddly enough my birth name was Allison ?)
