Save my Teen Marriage
Did anyone watch this Real Life last night? I'm just finishing it up now. It's an interesting concept with the hall pass. Teen marriages have such high failure rates, that I wonder how this "hall pass" will fair for them. I can't honestly imagine a teen marriage surviving this.
deleted-user·
If they are at the point where they "need" a hall pass, they shouldn't be married anymore anyway.
squishymommy1·
Yes. I had a discussion about it last night before I saw it but it was put forth as just a break. A break I think could be good (which was my argument last night). No dating others, but a break from the relationship to work on yourself and then come back together. Sleeping with other people is always a recipe for disaster and this just seems super messy ?

Most do not fair well though

How fantastic for you lala. I got married as a teenager too....statistics do not support that being married as a teenager is a good idea. I want more for my children then to be teenage brides/grooms.
squishymommy1·
ash....I'm 45 minutes in. I'm just at the "confession" tapes.

@lala
You said on another post that you have a husband AND a boyfriend. So how well is your marriage really going? Or are you on a hall pass?
deleted-user·
I don't know...I know lots of couples who have gotten married at 18 or 19 and they have thrived...I know that might not be the norm these days but it was actually most common back in the 50's and many of those marriages flourished. Maybe I'm biased because I got married at 19 and everyone said we would be divorced within 1-3 years and here we are 6.5 years later going strong.
But on the hall pass topic...that is a terrible idea in ANY marriage whether it is a teen marriage or not
deleted-user·
A hall pass would create insecurities and bitterness once the relationship resumes. I wouldn't be able to just turn my emotions off for that week.

I teach high school and teens getting married makes me cringe. Most are soooo immature and do not have a clue what the real world is about. If course, it does work for some, but statistically speaking, it's not a wise idea.
deleted-user·
I think @lala says anything to get attention or stir something up.
squishymommy1·
Statistically 1 in 3 teenage marriages will fail by 10 years. 1 in 5 will fail by year 5. We've beat the odds by having been married for 13 years. Yay us! But I know we are the minority in this case. Not the majority. Not even close to the majority.
deleted-user·
Although some teen marriages survive and flourish (yay!), I think it is a stretch comparing today's teenagers to even ones the same age 75 years ago. Maturity and responsibility levels are so different now.
Again, this is a general statement, there are always a few exceptions.
deleted-user·
Teen marriage is a BAD idea.
I got married exactly one week after I turned 18. My husband was 22.
We have been married for 9 1/2 years. We are by far the exception. It has not been an easy road.
We have a wonderful marriage, but it took a lot of work.
I'm hoping my children will wait until they graduate college.

@squishy that's awesome and definitely something to be proud of! Congratulations!!
In regards to another pp, you can't just assume that all teenagers are immature...most are but there are a few (like my husband and myself) who needed to grow up and when we got married at 19 we knew it would be okay and we were ready. I guess, like I said, I'm hurt biased because I have faith in my marriage.
@wyo you make a really good point...my husband and I have a tough time making friends in our same age group because maturity levels really seem to be fleeting these days!
deleted-user·
Wait wait! A teen "husband" and a 43 year old boyfriend?!
?????????
Hallelujah it's going to be a good day!
Lol!
I like double meat too. ??
Bwahhhahahaha!
I also married as a teen by the way.

My junior year of Highschool three couples, friends of mine, married. Each couple finished out to graduation, and against the odds are thriving in a successful marriage six years later. To be honest by now I expected atleast one of them to be divorced or tragic. I'm happy for them but I know that had it been myself at seventeen I was no way ready for such a commitment. They tease me playfully, I'm the last to have kids, the last to being married from that group. For me I didn't grow up until I screwed up, until I learned from my mistakes. I believe it depends on the person, some are ready, some are not. The hall pass just seems like dangerous territory though.

Final verdict: 1 separated 1 didn't

I have no real opinion of teen marriage. Just know who you're marrying and make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.
All marriages struggle at some point. We all go through hard times. Teen or not.

My parents married when my mum was 19, there marriage lasted 9 years. This was 30 years ago so was still common to marry young. I'm thankful they got married and had me obviously but I wouldn't want to be getting married as a teen and I feel the same about my kids. It's not that all teen marriages fail but you change a lot in your early 20s and a lot of times people grow apart.
I've been in a relationship since I was 18 and I've change dramatically from who I was to who I am now and thankfully we've grown closer together

It's "Real Life" on MTV. They feature different subjects every week. Last week was heroin addicts I think? Or maybe that was intervention ?
squishymommy1·
The African American couple separated (they had a child also). The white couple stayed together.

I got married at 18, my husband just turned 21 at the time. I don't really consider us a teen marriage becos our maturity is beyond that. But technically we are. We are doing amazing. Have had our bumps in the road but it's possible for a teen marriage to last. As far as the hall pass, I agree with other pp's. If you need one, you shouldn't be married.
deleted-user·
I didn't get married but I've been with my husband since I was 18.
This year will be 15 years together.
We waited a whole decade before getting married.
More people should try that!!!
squishymommy1·
I was hoping so too. The post script said that they were co-parenting so that's at least a positive.

True Life^^
I knew the minute that Rasheda flew out to sleep with the other guy she had been talking to that the marriage wouldn't survive..... I understand they had a hall pass but I mean come on someone who can put there husband out of there mind so quickly in my opinion shouldn't be married.....
In my opinion marriages are set up for failure these days teen or adult.... because to many people go into a marriage thinking hell if it doesn't work I'll just get a divorce I don't need to put up with that s*** .... alot of people who get married don't realize that actual work is involved in keeping a marriage together ..... I hear so many people saying it's 50/50 I feel like you need to give your all 100% to make it work and at times when your partner isn't giving there all you have to pick up there slack aswell....

I come from a culture where teen marriages are pretty normal. Years ago the majority worked out just fine, but the divorce rate has went up for us A LOT.
My mother was actually only 16 when her and my father got married and their still so in love its nauseating haha.
squishymommy1·
I hope my kids call me nauseating when they are adults ???? for real. Good for your parents.
deleted-user·
I always miss the good shows ? lol
deleted-user·
I hope to be nauseating too so no hate from me haha
squishymommy1·
Chavez...if you have any cable provider but charter ? you can watch MTV shows on their app
deleted-user·
I've been married since 17...I'll be 23 in august and i didn't need no hall pass.
Marriage still going strong?
deleted-user·
I'm almost 29 and not married. I don't belong here ?
deleted-user·
My husband and I were a teen marriage. I was 18 and he was 19. It was a roller coaster to get where we are now. We had a lot of problems in the beginning to the point that we needed help. We got individual therapy as well as marriage counseling. We read the 5 love languages together and together we made our marriage work. I can honestly say we are SO much better for it. It's a whole different relationship now from when we first married. We celebrated our 10 year anniversary in March.
I can tell you right now a hall pass would have been a huge no no for us. We would be divorced for sure.

I ❤️ The Five Love Languages, @bookworm.
squishymommy1·
I too love Five Love Languages!
deleted-user·
I recommend it every chance I get. It was a huge eye opener for the both of us.

I saw a post on here the other day about "falling out of love" and I meant to recommend the book, but I never made it back to the post.
