My two boys are 14 years apart and altho Im not a ftm the information that I've read on BB (courtesy of Squishy and other BB mamas) definatly put me up to date on safety and procedures that changed in that time frame. Before BB I didnt know that its safer to keep lo rear facing after he turns 1 because it wasnt a safety issue 15 years ago when my first son was an infant/toddler

Dd is safe because of Squishy. I would have had no idea about rear facing if it wasn't for her. I hadn't heard of it before I got BB and I haven't heard of it outside BB since.

Pp I am extremely grateful for squishy being here and helping us out. My LO might have been forward facing at 1. :( I had no idea how much safer it is to ERF. Thanks to her I also tell others. She's probably saved a lot of littles lives through her knowledge. My 2.5 year old is still rear facing and will be till he exceeds the limit on his seat. I don't understand why someone would prefer to stay ignorant to car seat safety cause they think their new car seat cover is "cute". Smh.

Squishy has helped me immensely with car seat safety!

I just recently told my mom my nephews car seat wasn't exactly safe. Straps were too loose and she puts the chest clip on his stomach. I was worried she'd go off on me saying the "he's fine, y'all did this and you were fine!". Instead she thanked me and did some research to make sure everything else was ok.

I am beyond thankful that squishy is on this app without her there is no telling what my dd would have come home in she gave me the contact info to get a car bed for dd as well as help me find a seat in my price range that would safely hold my just barely 4lb baby when she came home :)

I was an 18 year old ftm two years ago and the lessons I leaned about car seat safety from BABY BUMP were the only ones I had ever gotten.

Why is this not taught at labor or parenting classes? Why am I one of the only young mothers in my area who knows about car seat safety?

Thanks to Squishy and a few other ladies, I'm more informed than I ever could have been without them, and eventually it's my aspiration to become a CPST ! So thanks ladies.

Maybe you guys shouldnt be on baby bump.. then you wouldn't see people doing "everything wrong". It wont make you so angry of you just don't look at it. You're just hurting yourselfs and getting yourself worked up over something you can't change. Yeah, come on, gang up on me about what I said. I'm allowed to have an opinion as much as you are.

And then I go cry to my senior tech about having to install a forward facing seat for a 1 year old ???

Tay...I've had people argue with me while I was onstage...but more about car seat recommendations and not about actual safety aspects.

Now at seat check events sponsored by safekids... I have had LOADS of people say stuff like they would on here. At events we have a standard we have to follow. I smile and nod, give them the information and so long as they aren't doing anything illegal (no matter how much I hate it) install the seat the way they ask me too. Even if that means forward facing a 1 year old ?

Bb has made me so knowledgeable about carseat safety and how so many people are clueless about it.

There are carbeds, but they are different and for special needs babies only. They also are not anywhere near as safe as conventional car seats, and are only for use when absolutely necessary. Like Drs appointments. Not for going to the store or on long trips.

Kvon, they actually still use those box things. I forget the name of them, and it's rare. I heard they're only used if the baby needs it. Idk why a baby would need one, I haven't researched it.

My mom was good at car seat safety if they remembered to put it in the car.. they left my sister on top of the car when she was a couple months old, they didn't notice until they turned into the gas station and she ended up sliding off and sliding down the road, she survived though without even a scratch

That was their seatbelt. But my parents also lived in a time when there weren't seat belts for them either.

Strap covers are not safe unless they came with the car seat. If you want harness covers pick a seat that has them.

Yes it needs to come off inside the car. As adults we can regulate our temperature if we get hot by removing articles of clothing or turning down the heat. Babies obviously can't do either, and so they are at risk for overheating if you keep the winter covers on while in the car.

ooo...what about strap covers? Are those safe? Friend sent me some fuzzy ones to keep straps from rubbing...

So, speaking of car seat safety, I have a question I've been meaning to ask here.

I have a flannel cover that goes over the whole car seat, that I used in the winter last year to keep dd warm. It doesn't interfere with the straps in any way. Should I be taking it off once I get to the car? I'm still going to use it when we're outside, but I can easily remove it once we're in the car if it is safer.

We had one of those huge old pontiac station wagons. I was def under 5 but not an infant when we would take road trips and my mom would put our bunkbed mattress in the back where my sister and I would build a "road fort"...sure that was not at all safe but maybe kept my mom sane lol..

I'm getting sick of the "your son is 14 months old, you NEED to turn his seat around" comments from my sister. I finally told her that I actually care about my kids safety and she got soooo mad and told me I was wrong. Cause apparently she knows everyyyything about carseats. She's a dip s*** . I hate even being near her most of the time.

I can't imagine the stupidity you hear... And yea don't ever venture into birth month groups. Lol

But they're soooooo cute. Fashion trumps safety, duh!
