Getting on my soapbox for a minute. I want everyone to take a really good look at this photograph of a minivan. Yes that's a minivan. What would you say if I told you there was 2 kids rearfacing in the 3rd row that is now smashed by the roof? What would you think if I told you this accident was because of a semi that jackknifed and slammed into the rear of this vehicle going 50 mph. Would it convince you to RF to the MAX knowing that the ONLY injury that was sustained was from the child who was on the left side in the 3rd row, and that he ONLY had 12 stitches? Rearfacing is SO important regardless of the type of accident (frontal, rear-end, side impact) and can save your child's life. Rearface to the max limits of your carseat.

I forward faced all my kids when they were just over 1 years of age. I had never heard any different, they had to be 1, walking and 20 lbs. I'm glad so much has changed and there is so much more of a push to RF. Hopefully the laws change soon as well. I would have RF longer had I know.
Firsttimebaby...the child on the left side would have for sure been killed and likely the child on the other side too by the roof crushing their head or decapitating them. You can see the middle seat that is sticking out of the back. Their heads would have been right next to that.
Im not trying to say erf isnt better but its hard to justify something like this unless the exact same accident happened with ff and you compare the injuries. No two accidents are the same and whos not to say that it wouldnt have been the same outcome since it was side impact if the seats were ff. Again not arguing that people shouldnt erf just was an observation.
@olivia some people think of it as a "milestone" once babies hit the weight and height requirement for forward facing, even if the baby is definitely not ready to forward face. Most people won't research, and don't know that babies necks are not fully formed by the time they are 20 pounds or whatever. A girl I know on fb used this as her reasoning to forward face her 10 month old : "Well his sister is forward facing, so he always fusses trying to see what she's doing." Which I find to be a crappy excuse but whatever. I try not to judge but sometimes I just wanna be like bs. Some parents just don't wanna do the research.
I'm so glad I have this app or I wouldn't know anything about extended rear facing. So many girls my age front face so early, my fiancés cousin has a girl a day older than my son and she just forward faced her a few weeks ago. Our babies are 9 months. I try and share videos and everything over fb without directly targeting anyone and it never changed anybody's minds. It's so sad to see people ignore that rf is indeed safer and better for their lo's and just forward face because it's easier for them. ?
These children would have died if they had been forward facing. The trailer after jackknifing rolled ontop of the back, crushing it. The center seat headrest that you can see is actually sticking out of the car through where the rear window would have been.
Can you explain a little further how rear facing made a difference? I'm all for going as long as I can but I feel like their faces and bodies were at bigger risk here. Again, just looking for the specifics :) thanks!
I'm adding that I know in general how it helps just looking for in depth about this particular situation. And how it could have been different had they been forward facing
