Mild Intellectual Disability

Good morning ladies! Has anyone’s child been diagnosed with mild intellectual disability?
The psychiatrist at my sons school diagnosed him with it. He is 8 years old. I was just wondering how your experience is with the diagnosis and how you deal with mental breakdowns when he doesn’t get something?
If I tell him to clean his room or even simple tasks like telling him to get ready for school, he throws a fit for a simplest things.
I’m also having a hard time with my fiancé dealing with him as he thinks he just doesn’t want to listen but really it’s the MID.

Thanks in advance! 😊

@k_mae1989, your welcome, I struggle with my husband on this to. We just have to stand our ground. It’s almost like we have to parent them at times to.

@desert_chick, I try to be positive with him as much as I can, it’s mainly my fiancé that can’t deal with him because he thinks he just doesn’t want to listen but it’s the MID. So since he doesn’t understand we end up fighting because he thinks I’m parenting against him when that’s not it at all. I’ll try the sticker chart and see if it helps with getting him to do chores and stuff. Thanks so much for replying!

My son (3yo)has a severe intellectual disability, we have found that positive reenforcement is key with our son. So when he does something good or helps out we go overboard cheering and clapping. He loves it, and even starts clapping for himself. The more he sees that positive reaction, the more he chooses positive behaviors and helping out. With an older child cheering may not be enough, maybe try a sticker chart or a physical type of reward for completing tasks/ good behaviors.
