Delivering with a toddler in the room?

Hub and I have no one to trust to watch our 2 year old once I go into labor. I wanted opinions about having my toddler with hub and I during delivery. I think it'll be nice for her to see her baby brother right away instead of just bringing home a strange baby. But what do you think? Anybody else deliver with a toddler in the room? Would love to hear experiences. Thanks ladies!

Maybe someone or a nanny can wait in the waiting room with ur 3yr old.

Wow my daughter ask me the other day where do the baby come out from. ?I couldn't even tell her the truth. I just showed her the video on here (bb) n it didn't show were it came out just how it came out. Omg I don't want her to know a baby come out our vijay at this age.

But if u think ur kid can handled the truth and seeing it go for it!! I was 16 when I saw a baby born n loved it.

I have been wondering that too since MIL will not be out here until April 28 and my DD is May 10th so that's really cutting it close if I go into labor before she gets here. I've talked to a few neighbors and if I do go into labor early than my kids (ages 9, 3, and 16 mnths) will hopefully not have to go to the hospital. But if so my husband will be watching them in the waiting room. I would not personally have kids of any age in the room while I'm delivering not because I'm worried they will be traumatized but because I don't want to be stressed out. Delivery of a baby for me needs to take place in a quiet dim lit room and I just think having any of my kids there would create chaos in what I need to be a peaceful quiet environment unless of course the 16mnth old is sleeping then that would be fine. And the boys could go watch tv in the waiting room or something. But this is just my preference. I like the least amount of people possible and in the past have told people to leave the birth room if the vibe isn't calm enough lol. Good luck!! Whatever you decide will be the right choice for you and your family!

I wouldn't. I feel it could be traumatizing. It could be beautiful too but labor is unpredictable. My 6 year old happened to go with with to my routine ob appointment last Wednesday and I ended up getting flown out. I remained calm and I reassured her over and over and she still was teary eyed and scared as nurses were all over me starting IVs and getting me hooked up to everything. I feel so guilty that she had to witness that. Just a different perspective

I have always asked someone to watch my kids in the waiting room. So they could be coming in my room to visit and see the baby right away after baby is born. If you don't have someone to watch ur little one in the waiting room I'm sure a nurse will sit with him/her in the waiting room. I know hospitals don't like having kids in the delivery room. Just an idea.

I'd just have someone watch them in the waiting room when its time to actually deliver

I know in my birth plan for my hospital it had asked me if I wanted my other children present and I wasn't sure she is pretty smart for her age and I think she'd be ok but she is 5 my only worry is she freaks out when I'm in pain example baby moves weird and I react her reaction " mommy is the baby stretching you are you ok" I think it's totally up to you and the hospital of course but it really depends on if you think he can handle seeing it and seeing you in pain

I have an almost 3 yo and a 16 mo. There is no way I would take either of them to l&d with me! There are way too many cords, outlets, machines, and doors to play with. I can not imagine a more hectic labor and delivery!

Honestly if that was my only option I would just have dh drive me to hospital and then have him go back to home with the kids.

I have a four year old as well. I will not have him in the room while I'm delivering he doesn't like seeing me in pain and I feel I would scar him because he's just so curious lol

I have the same concerns!

We have no family and honestly all our friends are busy with lives of their own and so I don't really have anyone with spare time and able to take my daughter at the drop of a hat.

My daughter will be 15 months when brother arrives.

My husband works nights and 80+ hrs a week. We are both fairly certain that he will be at work when I go in to labor , so I will have all bags ready as I will likely have to drive myself to the hospital with my daughter.

My daughter is going to have to stay with us until my aunt gets to town.

I'm dreading having to be away from her for even a night... so I wouldn't mind her being around as much around possible...

My daughter is coming with me to hospital and someone will get her from there ... My last labour was 5 hrs so she might even be there while I deliver if people can't make it ... My hospital has no choice they can stick it ... There not going to send a pregnant women away because she has a 16 month old

I'm in the same boat my daughter will be almost 3 and we just moved to be closer to my husbands work, but in moving up here (14 hours away from family and friends) my daughter will likely be in the delivery room. She loves her ipad and I'm hoping it will keep her fairly occupied as my labour should be pretty fast (I was only in active labour with my daughter for 3 hours and had 8 minutes of pushing ) I plan on having another completely natural birth (my daughter was born at home with a midwife in a birthing pool) there are no midwives where we are now.. If all goes well i can go home with baby 6 hours after delivery :)

My hospital allows newborns & toddlers in the L&D rooms...My 2 year old was there when my nephew was born & my 2 month old niece was there when my son was born...The nurses said my 2 yr old did really good for his age.

He may be there during my delivery of his sister in a couple weeks as well! Depending on the time & situation...You have to do what you have to do sometimes!

I will definitely check with the hospital policy but if all else fails.. I do have my mother that has RA ?. I just didn't want to depend on her because her hands lock up all the time.. But thanks ladies for all of your opinions! I'm not too comfortable having my toddler in the room during l/d but I guess we'll see what happens.

They say if you're going to have a child in the room you need a person that is 100% focused on the child and can take them out of the room if need be. If you can't find someone to watch your toddler I would say have husband stay he with the little one because he's gonna be just as helpful if he's there

My hospital doesn't allow children. I would think that would be a bit terrifying for a child to see anyway.

most hospitals dont...so you may have to find other options

Think about how your toddler is going to feel/cope watching you go through that much pain. What long term effect might it have?? Personally I don't think it's a place for kids.

My hospital allows children in the room, but with the requirement that there needs to be an adult there for the child if s/he gets upset and needs to leave the room.

Our hospital doesn't allow kids while in labor. Although, i wouldn't have wanted my son who was 2 1/2 at the time i gave birth to our daughter. There is no way i would have wanted him in there and there is no way i would let either one in there for this birth. Do you have a friend, cousin, somebody who could watch your toddler? I watched mh cousins when his gf went into labor. Idk i would ask your hospital and see what they say.

I delivered my son with my (at the time 3 1/2 yr old daughter) in the room and I didn't like it. My daughter is well beyond her age and this time I won't have her or my son in the room unless I absolutely have to !

The hospital I am delivering at does not allow children in l&d, only in maternity.

Also, you may be in labor for hours, and/or through the night. Unfortunately, labor is no place for a toddler in a hospital.

If you're planning a home birth or birth at a birthing center, your options are a bit more open. Obvi if you're at home, having your toddler present might not be so difficult. As for a borth center, they are usually much more relaxed about who and how many can be present during your labor. But, keeping an eye on, entertaining, feeding, and napping a toddler during labor anywhere other than home sounds very difficult in my opinion. For both you and your partner and also your toddler.

Good luck ?I hope you find something that works for you.

No children were allowed in the room where I last delivered. :/ hopefully for your sake, they let you!

Yeah I guess I would have to check with the hospital policy. But I really don't want to just leave her with a nanny or someone she isn't comfortable with. ?

If you're delivering at a hospital, it likely won't be allowed during go time. I would check the policies.

I have a 2 & 3 year old and I don't feel it would be appropriate for them to be there. They will be coming to visit shortly after their baby brother is born though.

You can look into a nanny service?

If I was allowed more people in the room while I was delivering I would want my son there, I do plan to have him there for my labor as long as it's during the day (being cared for by my mom), they will have to leave for delivery as only 2 are allowed, my doula and husband.

I would check w your hospital. They may not allow it.
