My daughter is the same age and the same grade and she is the same way): like she eats breakfast here at home instead of school cause shes shy to walk into the cafeteria. I spoke to her teacher about it and the teacher is trying to make her open up to the kids. Its a big help cause i cant be at school all day with her. Her teacher will text me during the day just to keep me updated on her.

Talk to the teacher! S/he can help your little guy by putting him into groups with other kids during class, and keeping an eye on things.

I'm going through the same thing with my youngest he is in 1st as well I have literally cried about it. He has gotten a little better though he will go up to a kid and be like will you be my friend and there has been some No's and a couple that said yes. He isn't shy he.just doesn't make friends like my other child. I just tell him to be himself and have patience. I talked to his teacher and she tries to encourage. I think he will grow out of it. He likes playing alone though

I caught him taking pennies to kindergarten last year I asked him why he said he pays this girl to be his friend .(he had a huge crush on her) I told him he doesn't need a Friend like that.

I will talk with his teacher about it.. He said he has friends in class but doesn't play with them at recess.

I literally wanted to cry my eyes out when he told me. I didn't bring it up first. His words when he told me at the beginning were "you know, mommy?!" I knew when he said that it was going to make me sad..

Dh said he was the same way and I'm somewhat shy also so maybe it just runs in the family.

@pp that's exactly what u said! She's not a friend!

It hurts my heart knowing I can't help him besides just talking with him and hoping he will break out of his shell at recess.

Try not to worry too much yet. I'm a teacher, I can't tell you how many children tell their parents they don't have friends yet play happily all day at school. At 6 friendships are pretty fluid. Definitely speak to the teacher to make sure he is not on his own at playtime and share your concerns. Instead of asking him about friends maybe ask questions like; what's the best game you played today? Who would you invite to a party? Why? Tell me something funny that happened today.

Children are more likely to share concrete information than emotional information.

There's a blog you can Google with 30 questions to ask your child rather than how was your day.

In first grade my dd told me the same thing and when I brought it up to her teacher, she laughed and wondered why she would say such a thing because she has lots of friends. I worry too, because I am super shy. But I always encourage her to just find kids playing something she likes and say hi and ask to play. I always tell her don't wait around for an invitation.

I'm going to talk with his teacher about it whenever I see her next.

He's always excited about school and never complains about it or anything bad.

I just feel sad..

I did bring up the party invite to him because his bday is coming up and he said he doesn't want to invite anyone from school cuz they're not his friends.

I encourage him to ask to play with the other children that do what he likes but he said they don't let him because he's a new kid. I'm not majorly concerned about it. I just want to help him get out of his shell.

This is the first time he's mentioned something about school that makes me feels sad

Lol

I always ask him and talk about his day.. (Lunch, his work and what he learns)

You should talk to your school about getting a "friend bench". It's a specially painted bench where anyone who is looking for someone to play with goes to sit.

Sometimes kids don't realize someone is being left out until it's right there.

Sports and clubs will definitely help and it will give him something extra to do.
