Hi all! I've never posted on here before. I'm 24 I have 2 little girls (4&2). 27 weeks with a little boy. I've just found out today that I have gestational diabetes and that I'm anemic. I didn't have either with my last 2 pregnancies and I'm nervous. Any of you Mama's had gestational diabetes before? if so how did you deal with it as far as testing and diets. Also how big were your babies, did you have them early? Was labor difficult? Please help I'm a nervous wreck over here! Thanks in advance!

I had GD and was put on insulin as it wasn't diet related it was from my race. I had to test my sugars 4 times a day and take insulin with every meal. It was frustrating at first but i eventually got used to doing it. I was induced at 38 weeks due to a previous still birth and the GD. We were expecting him to be nearly 8lbs at time of delivery but he was 6lbs7oz. As i was induced, not dialated or effaced total time from start of induction to delivery was 32 hrs and 19 hrs of active labour. I ended up getting the epidural after 11 hrs of active labour after trying to hold out, but I'm glad I did. All and all none if it was that bad an experience and my little guy was well worth it 😄

@mommilove, I think for my first I was only tested once. For my second I started testing my blood sugars at around 18 weeks bc I was already high risk for it. And I had it again. Honestly, changing my diet was not hard at all. The most tedious was testing 4 times a day, but after a week or so, it was just part of my daily routine, not a big deal at all.

Thank you ladies. Did they test you more that once? I was only 5 points over the original fasting number.

And I should clarify, the higher risk for stillborn at 40 weeks and over is bc of the gestational diabetes. That’s why I was induced early for both.

I had GD for both of my pregnancies. I took it seriously and changed my diet. I was able to diet control it for my first pregnancy (I followed a strict diet and counted carbs and tested my blood sugars every morning and after every meal). Even though I followed the same diet, I was not able to control it with diet the second time and needed medication. My OB would not let me go to 40 weeks bc there is a higher chance for stillborn if you go to 40 and over, so I was scheduled to be induced for both at 39 weeks. Ended up needing an induction early than that for my second bc his heart rate were too low. My boys were both normal size 7 lbs, but labors were difficult, both over 40 hours, but I don’t believe that’s bc of the GD. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m by no means an expert, but did read into it and followed a strict regimen.
