Everyone is different, but, from my experience, BH were more in my belly (belly getting tight), less painful, and never got stronger. My actual contractions were more in my uterus area and especially my lower back. They continuously got more painful.
When in doubt: take a nice bath. Not too hot, but warm enough to relax. That will usually stop BH.
