It's not just the straps. Don't use anything that didn't come with it, even those head rest. If your newborn needs support do this.
Never soak straps. Use water and very very milk soap. If you believe the straps are beyond repair (or let's say very stinky , baby vomit) you can go online and find strap replacements for your carseat. I threw away my oldest straps but now I need it for my niece. Instead of buying her a spare, I'm spending less than 20$ for straps.
