I was 8 weeks when I found out I was pregnant and they did a abdominal for me

I agree with @kambam its usually vaginal till about 10 weeks and I've never noticed a difference...

It depends on wether or not they are able to find an image, my 9 weeks ultrasound they first tried abdominally, and then they did it vaginally.
