A 5 year old should be in a toddler bed or twin size bed?

My son was in a twin size mattress by then. I think I used the toddler bed up to age 3 or 4. He was kind of small.

My son was in a toddler bed until he was 4.5 and then I moved him to a twin bed.

My daughter went straight from her crib to a twin. We decided not to buy a toddler bed.
