@tiredmom I completely agree with you. I did some research on the history of these weapons. They were put out to the public for one reason and one reason only...to make money. The company that originally designed and manufactured it went bankrupt. Colt bought it from them, made adjustments, and sold it to the U.S. military. The military wanted mass production, but the company needed more funds to make it happen. How do we do that? Sell them to everybody! Just make the civilian version slightly weaker. Yeah, that's brilliant. Now these things have been available to the American public for almost 60 years. That's a lot of guns to keep track of, and record keeping wasn't great in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I see lots of them for sale every time we go to the marketplace, and it makes me sick to my stomach. All it would take is one tweaked mind 😔

@sassybitch the ar-15 should NOT be something just anyone can get. There needs to be mental health screenings, there needs to be training. You can't get a driver's license without first passing a driving test. Cars weren't made to kill people and there's plenty of people that NEED cars just to work. But if those people can't pass a driving test then they can't drive. In my opinion it should be the same with guns. Even if you believe you should be able to have a gun to protect yourself or your family, how can you protect anything if you can't hit the broad side of a barn even if it's 3feet away?

@tiredmom The problem with gun control lies within the term itself. It's like terrorism, there is no definitive meaning behind it that all can agree on. To one person, gun control may mean take every gun we can out of the hands of citizen. I will never agree with that because there are places in this country where people still depend on living off the land. However, I do agree that the AR-15 never should have been allowed in the hands of a civilian. And, really, guns are just the tip of the issue. If someone is crazy enough to want to kill multiple people, they will find a way; whether they use a vehicle, homemade fire bomb, homemade chemical bomb...there's definitely other resources out there. Regardless, the AR-15 has been available to the public since 1959, long before background checks were even considered for owning such a weapon. There are thousands of these weapons circulating around our country that could end up in any person's hands at any time. I might get backlash for all of this, but here is my home run...I really think that a lot of the solutions to these problems start at home with us paying attention and listening to our kids before they become the next shooter.

@junesmommy_15 oh yeah I agree with that. I get that the schools are doing the only thing they can. It's just pathetic that the schools are having to come up with Solutions to a problem that should have never existed.

@tiredmom I totally agree there. Definitely. I will say that the schools aren't to blame, the shooters are the reason children are afraid. The only way it would be the schools fault is if they didn't have the protection the children need.

@sassybitch this has been an issue for a very long time. There has been plenty of time to fix it since the first one. But too many people are against gun control.

There needs to be something done to stop it from happening. Not just teach us what to do if it happens, which I admit is also a good skill, but our kids should not be scared to go to school, or go outside, or go to a concert, or a restaurant.

B was in kindergarten when the Sandy Hook shooting happened. A week later they had their first "bad guy" drill, where they were taught to hide in the classroom in the case of an active shooter. Fast forward to this latest shooting, they are now sending a faculty member from the front office around each hour to make sure the classroom doors are locked to the outside. They are also increasing police presence at the school. There were threats made against all the middle schools in my area and many of the high schools yesterday. 1/4 of B's class was missing yesterday because parents are scared. Nobody has the answers right now, and the answers are not going to come overnight. I think the authorities and administrators are just leaping to quick, temporary fixes to protect our kids until legislation can be drawn up and passed.

@junesmommy_15 what I'm saying is is instead of teaching our children away from a guy with a gun make it harder for that guy to get a gun and get it into a school.

That needs to be done. I know it seems extreme but we have to keep our kids safe.
