@candacelouise, I’m sure it’ll be easier this time around because they’ll have a super close eye on you, but let’s hope it was the meds and nothing else! I’ve got preeclampsia so my doctor wants me on super strict bedrest until I’m 37 weeks and then he’s inducing me. My blood pressure is fairly high but I have a lot of protein in my urine. Being on my feet for so long at a time makes my blood pressure sky rocket so I’ve gotta be super careful.

Stay on top of your pain meds and you’ll be fine. Don’t wait until you start hurting to take them. Take them every 4-6 hours and manage your pain

@kcamps it is insane what could possibly be the reason of why it happened therefore making it impossible to figure out what all needs to be done for it to hopefully not happen again.

Hematologist where I get labs drawn and my Soliris (iv infusion that maintains aHUS) treatment for 3 hours. On top of sono with every OB appt. and an MFM. But yes swelling and BP didn’t start until after delivery.. well BP went crazy during l&d and I have a very easy fast delivery. Don’t even know what a contraction feels like. Hindsight is always 50-50 but it started during labor. Long story and my delivering OB didn’t believe me that something was terribly wrong. Until 12 hours later when my body/organs all but stopped working and I was rushed to ICU.

Ohh really!? Why did you get put on bedrest? High BP?

I am praying it was an allergic reaction to that medication. It’d be the best of all options.

@candacelouise, my goodness, there’s so many different possibilities. I was going to say it sounded like preeclampsia by the way you said how much you swelled up, but that was after birth? Are they keeping a close eye on you now? I have preeclampsia and I’m so scared about the worst that could happen, I’m a person that likes to do everything and ever since being put on bedrest I’m going nuts.

@kcamps 😂😂😂—- funny but I’m sure wasn’t at the time. So It sounds like I should just take a nurse home while the fiancé takes care of the baby and the nurse can take of me and all these embarrassing things that will happen 🙈.

@babymay2016, why do I relate to this so much😂 I think I was a day post c-section and they allowed me to take a shower. I was so excited but also was still trying to walk again and I just mostly stood under the water for a few minutes and got out. My boyfriend had his friend in the room visiting so I was stuck in the bathroom and part of my dressing on my incision came off and I was flipping out. I thought my insides were going to fall out, and I was standing there butt ass naked bleeding everywhere. So I had to figure out to either scream for my boyfriend or pull the emergency cord in the bathroom. I pulled the cord and 10 nurses rush into the bathroom and I’m just standing there naked and was like “uhh is this supposed to happen?”

@kcamps—- so I don’t advise you google until after you’ve had your baby. Lol cause it can happen to anyone! It’s an extremely rare disease called aHUS.

But the question “why” did it happen to me. It’s still and will not ever be answered.

It’s either 1- I was prescribed fluconazole (also known as diflucan) 3 days before I went into labor 3 weeks early (otherwise I had zero signs of going into labor) so possibly was an allergic reaction to that medication. 17 other cases of having aHUS reactions have been recorded in the US but none pregnant women.

2- I have had the disease in my system my whole life and l&d was my “trigger”. What made it “come out”.

3- enzyme deficiency (I forget which one exactly— this possible explanation of what happens was just told to me a couple months ago)

4- it wasn’t aHUS at all, it was the WORST case of preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome ever known to any doctor. (Mind you I had zero problems during pregnancy)

@candacelouise Oh well not to scare you more but just to prepare you... You can change your son on like the couch or something like that but I legit couldn't bend to pull my own underwear up for at least a week. This is a terrible story and my most embarrassing moment ever I'm about to share with you..... But after I had my son and because the c section I pooped in the shower. I legitimately could NOT bend down to pick it up. It was between asking my sons dad and my own dad to clean it up for me. And I asked my dad.... all while bawling my eyes out because I was so embarrassed. But you won't be able to "get down" or even pull your panties up. It's crazy..... You can't laugh or breathe or fart or anything. And if you do..... You might accidently poop and not be able to pick it up. Straight up

@babymay2016, ugh I’m on bed rest right now and I was forced to put my son into daycare because I can’t take care of him during the day by myself. I’m literally confined to my bed

@kcamps yeahhh thankfully and hopefully it’ll still be a way better recovery than my first! I can’t begin to explain how much your entire body hurts when you retain 50 pounds of fluid and all your organs are shutting down... for TWO weeks. You lose all muscle and any kind of stamina from not being able to get out of bed. I didn’t even want to move in bed because my body hurt head to toe so incredibly bad it was unreal. And that’s with iv medication and lots of sedation.

The whole keeping up with a toddler though!? That’s a whole other thing haha or not being able to “sleep when baby sleeps”.

I tried everything to not have to take it and there just wasn't any way. My doctor actually yelled at me, well a nurse or someone I don't know... But about letting myself be in that much pain. And I was like "I can't take those! My baby is crying and I can't even get up to help him!" It will be at least a few days we have to take them. I totally feel you and I wish I could come help you and then you help me, that's how scared I am. I'm terrified.... My son is already all over the place and it's hard to take care of him now alone. I pray that for no reason would I have to be on bed rest because I really couldn't do it. I would "have to" but I would have to take care of my son. It's very scary....

@candacelouise, a c-section isn’t easy recovery let’s just say that. Just like what @babymay2016, said you really need to stay on top of your pain medicine. They prescribed me hydrocodone and I felt like absolute crap, and that resulted into me just taking them as little as possible and making me in even more pain than what I should have been in. It’s going to be a good month or so until you start to feel better, your belly is going to feel numb for a few months too from where they made the incision

@babymay2016 yesss! People don’t realize how much those to combined work.. esp 800 Ibuprofen.

I literally hadn’t really stopped to think a lot about it because for the most part my son is pretty self sufficient in the means of getting around and up on things... couch, chairs, I can change him on lower things till I can lift him again on his actual changing table, but I hadn’t thought about the car and crib!

But yes it can be done! It’ll be a whole new learning experience just as the first one was

Like I know it can be done but just thinking about having to constantly get up and down, while holding a newborn, and having to follow a wild toddler around is stressing me out. It would be one thing if it’s a vaginal delivery, but a c-section is such major surgery. I’m going to definitely tell my doctor not to give me what they did last time because I just literally won’t be able to function on my own.

@candacelouise It is going to be very hard... I don't even know how to prepare myself for this and you ladies are so much closer than me 😣 but really you're going to have to take the medicine for the first few days for sure but ibuprofen and Tylenol really does the trick. And it's safe to use both at the same time because they use different parts of your brain to release into your body. I know people do it everyday too.... wow I'm terrified though. We can do this too! Somehow!

I'm just so worried because I know the pain is going to be great, and then yeah I will have to chase my son around and don't want to over do it... But no choice when you're the only one. I understand. Well Ibuprofen alone will not do it but you can take 1000mg of Tylenol at the same time as 800mg Ibuprofen (two tylenol, four regular ibuprofen) and it is the same a a prescribed pain pill. I absolutely HATE pain meds but I got into trouble for not taking them and had myself in so much pain I couldn't do anything. That's why I say make sure because you will have both kids and you don't want to be in that much pain.

@babymay2016, @kcamps, sooo I’m having a section this go round because of the what happened post delivery with me son. So I have no idea what a c section feels like, BUT I have had major surgery before. And I know to take the medication before the pain gets unbearable! But I’m with y’all, how am I’m gonna have surgery like that take care of a brand new baby AND a toddler !? I know it’s possible because people do it every day. But still how!? My son is still rear facing and I don’t think he can get into my vehicle by himself. And he surely can’t get into or out of his crib.. well he doesn’t thankfully!

Yes I know exactly what you mean and that's why I got off them as soon as possible and because I was alone. I could NOT stay awake. I was so confused and upset and worried I was going to hurt my son. I missed so much time with him because I was SCARED to hold him. My biggest fear too is what I'm going to do when I have this baby. My son will be two.

@babymay2016, yes I had a c-section with my son, I do know what to expect. The pain medicine they gave me made me nod in and out of consciousness, I hated every moment of it. I remember the day we came home I fell asleep for a second and I woke up and my hand was over my sons face. After that I tried to take them as little as possible. My mom gave me 800mg ibuprofen and it worked somewhat. The part that I’m worried about isn’t the medicine it’s the having to keep up with my two year old while still trying to heal and care for a newborn.

The days you will be alone you're going to want to probably take the pain pills whenever someone gets back to help you. But try to only use Tylenol and Ibuprofen during the day time. I mean the pain is unreal. Don't try to not take the meds when you are able to. You will need to take them, but weind yourself off before most people usually do... When taken together Tylenol and Ibuprofen are basically the same as a prescription pain killer. Without the nasty side effects. Should do the trick if you take it when you can

Did you have a c section with your son? Do you really know what to expect? It is very hard to do but maaaainly because of the pain medicine. And so I would suggest you take the medicine when you're supposed to and as much as you're able to for the first 5 days, and then cut down on it, and when you are alone after that you'll need to just be able to take Tylenol AND Ibuprofen. Don't weind yourself off to the point where you start to REALLY hurt... the hardest part for me was that I was mostly alone, and I didn't WANT to take the pain medicine because it made me sleepy and not able to take care of my baby. But you will have to take it. There isn't any other way around it. Take the medicine for the first five days but by the 7th day I was only taking like half of the pills, then taking none at all and Tylenol and Ibuprofen as OFTEN as you're able. It is really hard.
