Has anyone experienced a formula-fed infant with a milk protein allergy? We have been struggling with this since my daughter was 5 weeks old(she is now 16w) First, she was put on soy formula which caused her extreme constipation. Then, she was switched to hypoallergenic Nutramigen, which cleared up all of her initial symptoms (extreme fussiness, extremely gassy, refusal/crying during feedings, trouble sleeping, etc.) But it also caused constant diahrrea, I'm talking poop that's basicslly water, and varying degrees of mucus in all of her stools, sometimes she will just poop a glob of mucus. And of course, the constant diahrrea has caused her to have a diaper rash that just won't clear up amd causes raw, open sores. :( We took her to a GI specialist today who gave us two new formulas to try: amino acid based Neocate & Elecare. Does anyone have experience with these formulas, or this problem?? If so, what worked to fix it or alleviate some of baby's discomfort? I hate that nothing I've done seems to help her at all and really need some encouragement :(
@kambam that would be awesome if you could. I really appreciate it! I just had to take her to the regular pediatrician this morning because she has a nasty cold that's causing her to choke on mucus in her sleep :(
@katiibby, yeah I'm grateful she grew out of it. And hopefully it'll never come back. My husband has always been a bit sensitive, but when he got into his twenties it turned into a full-blown allergy. Same with his sister, who has an epi-pen.
If you have insurance it might cover some at your hospital. You'd have to ask your doc for a panel I think. Have to call ins. But its mostly out of pocket. I can find that holistic place I passed if you want.
@kat616 at least she grew out of it! That's what I'm hoping for because I would hate for her to have to deal w these issues all her life :( I already feel terrible that I can't breastfeed anymore and this just makes it worse
@kambam I'll definitely look into that. Do you know of it's covered by insurance or if it's out of pocket?
My baby had a dairy intolerance. She was on an amino acid formula (she did best with Puramino and okay with Elecare...we never tried Neocate but a lot of moms love it). She really did a lot better on the amino acid formula. She did horribly on Nutramigen because there's still milk in it (just broken down, but it's still there!). If you're on Facebook I highly recommend MSPI and Reflux Mamas group (MSPI stands for milk soy protein intolerance). Also, you can message me too. I've been through it and it's tough. Gratefully my baby outgrew the soy intolerance at 9 or 10 months and just barely outgrew the dairy intolerance at 18 months.
@kambam thank you so much, mama!
