okay, so my little guy is breast fed, but we try to give him a bottle of breast milk atleast once every three days. his doctor said 2 1/2 ounces for him is good, but i knew that was too little... i’ve been giving him about 5 1/2 ounces & he wants to eat again 30 minutes later. what gives??

@beemommyof3, if i could exclusively breast feed him the whole first year, i totally would, but since my boyfriend is the one in school, i have to be the one to make the money & i will be working 5-7 hours a day starting again in march. he just said to give him a bottle so he’s not foreign to it when i go back to work & he has to be fed a bottle until i get back.

I understand and im just saying your boob is enough. Just because you cant see it doesnt mean it isnt there. A pediatrician specializes in babies. Unfortunately they dont always know how to feed them especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Most doctors follow formula guidelines and it is 2 different things. Only reason im saying something is because no one told me and I would have appreciated knowing as a first time mom.

first time mom over here... i just was going by what my doctor told me. after all, he deals with babies every single second of his work day, so he knows a lot, as well. he recommended giving him a bottle because when my milk wasnt quite in, he had to have formula because nothing was coming out of me, but he hated sucking on anything but my boob so doctor told me to give him a bottle every so often so that this doesn’t continue. i’m only giving him what i thought he was needing, since he would cry so hard that he couldn’t breathe unless i put either my boob or bottle to his mouth.

They need 1 to 1.5 oz per hour no matter the age. It will never change because your milk adjusts to fit babies needs every day.

My 10 month old doesn’t even drink 5 1/2 oz at a time 😳

Ours told us they don't recommend giving a bottle until 6 weeks because of nipple confusion, (I did it anyways because I wanted to know how much he was eating). Either way you do what's best for you and Elliott.

I agree with @beemommyof3 a lactation consultant will have all the answers for you.

There are many ways to feed a child that dont require a bottle. Cup, syringe, spoon feeding as well.

That is who you would go to for Lactation advice. Going to a doctor for breastfeeding advice is like going to a mechanic to have your tooth pulled. They dont know. You dont need to give your child a bottle

My son is 4 months old and he is now refusing bottles because I stopped giving him bottles when he was a month and a half old. I don't see a problem with giving him a bottle so he is use to it- now about the 5 1/2 oz thing JJ went through this and it was because he was wanting to suck not feed. I would cut it down to 2 1/2 oz bottle wise and if he is crying put him on your boob and let him suckle.

@beemommyof3, i’m giving him a bottle because his doctor told us he needs a bottle every day

@beemommyof3, like i said, we were doing a version of it. i honestly didn’t know what pace feeding was until i made this post.

He doesnt need a bottle until you go back to work and you dont need to pump until then either.

@beemommyof3, i do both. i only am bottle feeding once every few days because he will be getting a bottle when i’m at work come march

Нравится Ответить

@agrace15 It needs to be every half ounce and not ounce.

Нравится Ответить

You should put baby to breast instead of bottle feeding

@beemommyof3, a version of it. we stop him every ounce to burp him & just to overall slow him down since he drinks so much.

Are you pacefeeding?

@damiensmommy1117, i’m just not able to make a bottle bigger than 5 1/2 ounces with what i’m pumping

Нравится Ответить

@agrace15

Well what you pump isn't a reflection of what you are actually producing. Pumps kind of suck at pulling the milk out and baby is much better at getting the milk.

my boobs are not producing enough for me to pump out as much as i have been giving him

@damiensmommy1117, how do you recommend i slow him down?

Gracie ·Мама сына-младенца

he finishes his bottle in about 10-15 minutes, but that is also with the 5 1/2 ounces.

my doctor told us to give him a bottle a day since i will be going back to work in march. we haven’t been doing a bottle a day, but have been doing it every couple of days just to make sure he will still take it. i’m not sure what pace feeding is, but by assuming, it is when you feed him a little, take the bottle out for a bit & so on? if so, we do that already & he still wants so much more. he’s a big boy, almost 12 pounds already at 1 month. i just don’t want to neglect his hunger & feed him below what he is asking for.

It's easier to pace feed if you have a preemie or size 0 bottle nipple as well.

Нравится Ответить

5 and a half ounces is a lot, it's stretching his little stomach. He probably just wants to suckle. May I ask why you're giving him the bottle?

He's used to sucking the breast. Babies can't comfort nurse a bottle. 2.5o is plenty and should be pace feeding.
