In yet another stunning pro-donut argument, Romaine lettuce is doing its best to trample your New Year resolution to eat healthier.

In all seriousness, it looks like Romaine lettuce is to blame for an outbreak of a particularly nasty strain of E. coli in both Canada and the US. Washing it won't suffice due to all the nooks and crannies, so at this point the best option is to just avoid it until further notice.
