If I were to let my son comfort nurse, after feeding him, would that boost my supply?

For a 3 week old. 3.5 ounces is a lot in my view but you can do what you wish. Your newborn 3 week old drinks more than my 8 month old.

@bklosxo After 4 to 6 weeks. Newborn only need a few teaspoons to an ounce a feeding.

Wait, if he needs that per hour and he eats about every 3 hours, would the 3.5 ounces be spot on then?

Dont feel bad. I overfed my first 2 before I realized they didnt need all that milk. You live and learn

You would see a lactation consultant because breastfeeding is there speciality. You see a pediatrician for your baby problems, not milk. With formula you have to give more because they dont get the same nutrients from formula as they do breastmilk.

With bottle feeding it is easy to overfed which is why pacefeeding is important even if he can drink it. They will drink a gallon from a bottle because they want to suckle for comfort. That cant be done with a bottle, he isnt crying for more, just wants to be comforted.

Even if he doesn't spit any of it up or anything? I've tried to give him less but he still acts fussy afterwards :/ It's odd that the pediatrician wouldn't have told me that!! I feel like a horrible mama now if I'm over feeding him 😞

pediatricians arent lactation consultants, they follow formula guidelines not breastmilk

that is too much which is why you think your supply is low. Babies cant comfort suckle from a bottle. Only breast or pacifier. My 8 month old drinks 3 ounces a feeding. A breastfed baby will not go over 5 ounces a feeding at a year old. they need 1 to 1.5 ounce per hour after 4 to 6 weeks

I have been! Thankfully he doesn't have any problem with nipple confusion either! And really??? When I give him a bottle of breastmilk he is up to 3.5 ounces at a feeding, his pediatrician said that was fine???

Breastmilk is different then formula for consumption. Make sure you are pace feeding!

Anything between 1 to 4 ounces is great. With breastmilk you only need an ounce to 1.5 ounces per feeding at his age

@beemommyof3 thanks Mama! He gets formula too, and breastmilk from a bottle (so that my boyfriend can feed him as well) I just haven't been able to pump as much as I would like, and I would like to give him exclusively breastmilk if I can start saving more!

@brownsugarluv that makes sense, I definitely feel like that may have been a stupid question now 😂

Why do you need a boost?

Yes, I let the baby unlatch.
