I need to get a supply of milk started for my daughter for when I go back to work. This might seem like a stupid question. But I haven't done this before. After she eats do I pump from the side she ate on or the side she didn't eat on? How long should I pump for? I will be going back to work the first of January and got told to pump at least 1 or 2 times a day starting now.

@kyntonsmommy, it’s hard to say in my experience usually feeding close together indicates a cluster feed for growth but with pumping it may be that she isn’t getting enough milk the first couple of days You may have to feed her the milk you pumped to save the first couple days before your milk increases to make sure she is getting enough. But usually after your milk increases she should be getting more then enough plus some for you to save. After she feed try just one or two ounces and if she eats it all and still wants more that will tell you if she is getting enough or not.

@kyleigh.e.h So I pumped earlier right after her feeding. She went to go feed an hour ago and kept unlatching and getting frustrated like she wasn't getting enough. We sat through it for about 30 minutes. I stood up and rocked her to sleep. I had also made sure that each side was making enough milk for her to drink. She woke up about 20 minutes ago acting like she was hungry again. She latched on for about 10 minutes and was fine. But after she unlatched she acted like she was still hungry. I tried multiple times to relatch her. She will suck a few times and unlatch like she is frustrated. I again checked to make sure each side was producing and they both had milk squirt out when I tried. Could she just be going through a rough cluster feeding phase or could this be somewhat related to the pumping? When she was acting hungry after feeding I switched sides to see if it would help but didn't make a difference to her.

@kyntonsmommy, that’s perfect. The more you pump in addition to feeding the more you will produce so you should start to notice an increase in milk over the next couple days. Every ounce counts :)

Is this good for my first time pumping? The one that's more full was from a 17 minute pump.

@kyntonsmommy, I’d pump the breast she doesn’t feed on until it’s empty and continue to pump it for 5/10 minuets after and then pump the breast she does feed on 5/10 minutes after she is done even if it’s empty.

@kyleigh.e.h should I pump for the amount of time she usually feeds? She usually only feeds for 10 maybe 15 minutes

I’d pump from both sides after she feeds even if you don’t get much or anything from the side she ate off. It will tell your body you need to make more milk so in a couple days you will start to produce more. Personally I would pump after every time she eats not just 1 or 2 times a day. Also to keep your milk up make sure your job knows you need to pump during the day cause if you don’t it could cause your supply to drop drastically
