My nipples are inverted so Alice is unable to latch. I didn’t receive effective care in the postpartum wing after giving birth so i didn’t know how to care for my breasts. I was essentially hooked up to an electric pump and told to just sit there until it started to hurt. So pumping from there and at home that’s exactly what I did. My left breast became extremely engorged to the point that I began to develop an infection so the last three days I’ve been using the cabbage leafs to try to dry my milk and have been giving my daughter formula as I was not producing nearly enough to feed her while pumping. But now my breasts are both the same size and both producing the same amount of milk (idk how much) but they are both still leaking. I want to give my baby my milk still so I want to start pumping again but shes not doing poorly with the formula. I’m worried that I will not produce enough, so is it ok to give an 8 day old both my milk and formula? I want her to have enough to eat (and she eats A LOT) but I really want her to have the benefits of my milk as well. Is it ok to give her both? I can’t find anything specific online for a situation like mine and I don’t really want to consult the breastfeeding consultant at my hospital because they were extremely dismissive with me during my stay and honestly made me feel like it was my fault that my daughter couldn’t latch

Update y’all: I had a supper busy day so I didn’t get a chance to contact the group I was talking about but daddy’s going to spend some snuggle time with Alice tomorrow so I can get a few things done. But after putting it off all day of fear of it hurting, I finally pumped both breasts tonight and I’m happy to report that neither one hurt and between the two I got 2 oz😭🙏🏻😍

Thank you everyone. A friend of mine saw a fb post I made and actually knows a free lactation support group that provides weekly meeting and access to local LC’s in my area and sent me the information so I’m going to give them a call in a bit to see what they can offer us as far as help. It’s not even that I have anything against formula but it just doesn’t feel right to me to not give her my milk if my body is producing it. As a new first time mom I was really easily scared at my hospital with some of the nonsense I was being fed, so I was scared that I wasn’t feeding baby enough. But I still seem to be producing. This morning when I woke Alice up to do our morning routine I did try to get her to latch and she was able to on each side but only for a few seconds and she got very frustrated and stopped trying after about 20-30 minutes of trying so I did make her a bottle. I don’t want to overfeed her for sure, I didn’t even know that you could overfeed with formula! I wasn’t really told how to do anything with her so we have been learning as we go

Best thing for a clogged duct is actually feeding baby directly. As for the inverted nipple. I would squeeze and tug on mine until the nipple stuck out then latched the baby on the side (only one side was introverted).

I'm sorry the LC didn't help you.

At a week old they only need 1 oz because that's all their little tummies can hold . Also a pump is no indication of milk supply. Baby will always be able to get more

Pediatricians don’t know about lactation and if the one at the hospital wasn’t helpful/ (sounds a bit disrespectful) then there are lactation consultants that you can reach out too that don’t work in hospitals. My midwife has names of many and so does my Doula. In fact my Doula I believe is also trained as a lactation consultant. Look in your area and see if there is anyone like that that’s willing to help and give answers. Also? It’s not your fault. Some women can breastfeed and some women can’t, inverted nipples or not. There is zero shame in that.

@beemommyof3, I have been lucky to produce 4-5 oz in a 24 hour span

@beemommyof3, I know she doesn’t need more but she wants more, and her pediatrician says to let her eat until she doesn’t want to eat anymore as she’s not getting ill
