Bring your own road food! My family used to road trip out to NM every year and we always packed our own food and just made bathroom stops. Set aside money for anything extra in advance.
Whenever we had to travel far as kids it was always pb&j sandwiches since they are easy to make on the road and bottled water. Only stop for bathroom breaks.
