In September when I have my first scan I have been told it's also time for my Down's syndrome screening and if I have it done there's a chance of miscarriage it's scared me a bit. May I ask your views on having the test and/or if you had it done or not?

There is no chance with screening, they do an ultrasound and take some blood from you. IF you get a "high risk" result, then they will offer you a diagnostic test, where they stick a needle through the tummy into the womb and take a bit of amnionic fluid, that procedure has 2% miscarriage change. You will be OK! Xxx

Don't need to worry at all:) x
Thank you all so much, you have put my mind to rest. I should sleep better tonight xx 😀
They use the NT measurement, concentration of 2 proteins in your blood (not baby's!), your age and bmi, they stick that into a formula and say if you are heigh or low risk :)
Make a list of all the questions you have about the tests etc and when you go to see your midwife take the list with you they'll be more than happy to answer all your questions x
No no, they don't take blood from the baby's neck, they measure NT distance on the scan, basically the width of fluid seen behind their neck.
@rosieposie2626. If the doctors know there is a definite major problem with the baby they offer you further testing. This happens later in pregnancy when they give you the option of taking a sample from your amniotic fluid. But I wouldn't even think about it or worry about it as it's unlikely. Honestly talk to them about it in your scan appointment they should be happy to answer your questions and it will make you feel better if your worried x

Nothing to worry about most of the tests are done through checking your blood thy wouldn't do anything to the baby if it's not safe especially without your consent x
@gabilicious, oh thanks I was worried about it xx
The tests for Down syndrome is just a simple blood test from your arm no harm to the baby at all
@sobia, today's appointment was cancelled, now have to go tomorrow at 11:30 😀
A friend said they also take a blood sample from the baby's neck some how?
When they test for downs it's just a blood test. Totally safe. At least that's how mine was done. When you saw your midwife she should have given you a booklet with the information in it. If not call them or speak to your GP.
