My fiance left something in the oven and fell asleep. I wake up because I smell something burning well he left it in there and the whole house was full of smoke and it smells so bad. My eyes burn so bad and my kids won't stop crying. I swear their dad is going to kill us all one day because he's so fucking careless! His excuse was that he was tired and fell asleep. Like really? I woke him up to tell him and he does nothing. I had to run around and get some fans going to try and get the smoke out the house. I'm surprised they haven't called the fire department on us. We live in an apartment building.

@nomaci I can't believe it. If ours doesn't have batteries I guarantee none of the ones in the hallway of the building does either.

I know it is their responsibility to replace them but as a renter you should at least check them once a month to make sure they are in working order for your own safety

@nomaci it has batteries. I just checked the smoke alarm looks brand new but they never put any batteries in it. I'm going to call the manager later to let her know.

@beebaby yes it is their responsibility. It says it in the lease. They can not rent out an apartment without working fire alarms and a fire escape.

Management just sent people round for the yearly fire alarm check in our building, but we usually use the Nest smoke alarm which checks itself every month.

Do yours run on batteries or are they wired? Different builders use different types too.

Nope. You are responsible for checking them and changing batteries. If you have one for carbon monoxide you should check it also. You should do a beep test every month

@beebaby I never thought to check I assumed they worked since it's dangerous and a requirement for them to work.

You should definitely check that for sure

@beebaby yeah we do but none went off. These apartments are shitty I wouldn't be surprised if they don't work.
