You have to be so far along (some say 35 weeks, some say 37) or have the baby born. I fell into the baby born category as mine was a preemie and early.
Some companies will cut a check so you can buy the one you want (If you want what they don't ship out.) But they may only give you some money towards that and then you would have to cover the rest.
This is what a friend did, she got $200, bought a $400 pump, because that's what she wanted.... she could have gotten a $300 pump, but wanted something her insurance didn't send out.
