If you send someone a message on Facebook and they dont have messenger do they still get the message

@chasha2017 oh ok cause I sent someone message and it looks like they got it but then it offered to invite them to messenger so I'm over here thinking she ignoring my message
They have to have messenger. Before I had it, I used to be able to log in from my computer or desktop site to view my messages but they eventually blocked access that way and I was forced to download messenger.
