I may be in the minority on this one, but am I the only one who lets my kid throw tantrums? Even in public.
Now, don't get me wrong. She doesn't throw them often, she's usually SUPER happy unless she's tired. But, kids will be kids, and sometimes to them it feels like the world is ending, thus resulting in them dramatically throwing themselves on the floor, screaming with no tears, and clawing up your leg.
And I let her do it. I ignore it, but I allow it nonetheless. I don't pop her. I don't argue with her. I just let her do her thing, and then when she realizes it's not working, she stops.
I am that mom in the grocery store with a wailing toddler, getting side eyed, and I'm sure someone is thinking, "Wow, she needs to control her kid." Here's the reality of it, though: we can't control our children, especially not toddlers. They don't have the social or cognitive skills to understand that what they're doing is inappropriate. We cannot control their reactions. We cannot control their emotions. And I don't try to.
My SIL was bragging on FB about how my niece is so well behaved (she's 15 mos), and said it's because they pop her when she messes with things, talks too loud, or bugs strangers, and leave a public place when she's throwing a fit, and they pop her in that situation too. Now, I don't judge, however...thats just not right to me. At 15mos, they still don't understand WHY they can't do those things. All she understands is "I'll get popped if I do this."
For me, that's the equivalent of raising your child to fear you. And I just don't parent that way. I was raised not to speak unless spoken to. If I cried, I'd get my ass beat, and some more if I cried over it. I wasn't allowed to express any negative emotion or get excited. I wasn't allowed to touch anything or talk to anyone in public. And I don't wanna raise my kid like that.
My child(ren) will be able to express themselves, negative or positive. She'll speak her mind. She'll be able to explore. However, she'll know, just as she knows now, that throwing a fit will get her ignored. Yeah, when we're in public, she'll try to mess with things, and she's always saying hi or playing peekaboo with the person behind or beside us. And they think it's hilarious. She loves it.
Idk...im not trying to judge anyone. I just...growing up in a household where any kind of emotion or expression was met with hostility, I can't do that to my kid, especially knowing that it's a big underlying cause to my anxiety and depression. Instead I want to encourage her, and praise her for good behavior.

My little sister was THE WORST for tantrums. Throwing herself on the floor of the grocery store and screaming kinda tantrums. My mom? Ignored her and walked away. Done.

@boymama0908 exactly! Adults and children both get upset. The difference? We (for the most part) can contain our emotions and and understand that there is a time and a place. They don't understand that. Now, an 8 year old screaming and crying in a grocery store over something minimal? No, obviously they should be disciplined. But a toddler or small child doesn't understand what is and isn't appropriate in terms of dealing with frustration and disappointment.

I'm kind of in between. I only let my big kid get away with so much. If it was enough that I couldn't handle him easily we would leave the store and I'd let him scream as loud as he wanted in the car until he calmed his ass down.
With my little guy he doesn't really throw fits in public but he does at home all the time. I try to let him burn himself out most of the time and then tell him why I'm mad. He's not even 2 yet. I've tried swatting at his hand and he doesn't care. The kid has no fear. No idea what "no" "don't" "calm down" etc mean. Idk. We just do what seems best in that situation. Sometimes a quiet talk works. Sometimes letting them scream until they can't anymore works.

@lovelily That's what works for us lmao. We used to pop her, but it just led to more screaming and crying. Ignoring it works much better, and if a few minutes go by and it just gets worse, that usually means naptime.

@kimberlyyyy_the-preemie-mom Absolutely! Isabelle doesn't care about pops or hand swats either, half the time they just make it worse because her feelings get more hurt, but I will do it if she's attempting to get ahold of something dangerous, or (her favorite thing) trying to climb the furniture and she doesn't listen when I say no.
Bigger kids obviously get disciplined according to what is appropriate for their age, but toddlers and small children? They don't understand.

I agree that they need to feel like they can express themselves good bad and ugly... but I'm not comfortable with letting her get completely out of hand in public... it almost never happens, but when it does it's because she is tired and over stimulated... so I just leave the store, and take her to the car, we talk about what's bothering her... if she's too upset, we just go home and she goes down for a nap... but I try to be understanding and non-judgemental when I see people's kids loosing it in the store... I try to smile at the parents... because we all have been there! 😅

@dreamermom Yes! I can't stand it when I see people WITH CHILDREN giving me dirty looks if Isabelle is getting upset. Like, you really wanna act like your kid has never thrown a fit in the middle of Kroger? BET.

@dreamermom Isabelle isn't old enough to really talk things through yet, but normally the only time she gets upset is if she's tired. She's a pretty simple kid lmao, if it can't be fixed with a snack, it can be fixed with a nap. 😂😂

I allow my son to throw his lil tantrums too ..no matter where we are..now if he gets toooooo extra I'll take him ina private place and let him finish but other than that.. I completely ignore him too ! I feel as if he will continue to whine and feel like he will get his way if I constantly feed into his tantrums ..now his dad and grandparents feel like it's embarrassing and tries to stop him or discipline him but it only gets him going even more..I understand that my son is going through phases or changes now that he is turning two and doesn't understand how to fully express himself so it's no need to get frustrated and embarrassed ..as long as I'm calm and showing him the right way to handle his emotions-everything will be just fine !!! He doesn't throw much tantrums with me -it's always when someone else is around and he knows they are a "sucker" and will fall his whining

Psh you are a horrible mother for not beating your child into submission. How else are you going to earn their respect at 1 year old 😂 TOTALLY KIDDING! I agree with literally everything you said! I hope to raise my kids the exact same way, to love and explore the world and not fear it. People who give you crazy looks are just forgetting what it's like to have a toddler or a little kid in general 🙄

@amichelle2 see, Isabelle throws more tantrums with me bc everyone else gives in and gives her what she wants...mama doesn't play that game. No, you can't have my glasses. No, you can't hit the dog. No, you can't throw my phone around. No, you can't play with the spider on the floor. Sorry kid. 😂😂

@aboutellesbabes I have people constantly tell me that I'm letting her "control me" by not making her stop crying. Like...🙄🙄🙄 Letting her be in control would mean I'm letting her have her way. I'm not. But I'm not gonna spank her when she doesn't understand why she can't chew on a restaurant table or pull the hair of the stranger behind us. 😂
Shawna Santistevan·
Sometimes caleigha does get spankings but it's no often and it's really only if she's had a time out for being bad already.
I allow her to throw tantrums as well no matter where we are. She's stubborn though she doesn't stop she just keeps going. Ryan gives her anything so she won't throw a fit

@scurlock.mommy i understand. I was raised in similar way. I have really bad anxiety from it too.
I wont raise my daughter like that either. I recently read an article that some of the things parents label as bad behavior is actually them just being kids and showing emotion. Like you said if you showed any emotion you got punished. Having an emotion isn't bad behavior, its a child expressing themselves. Parents need to ask themselves 'bad behavior or expressing themselves?' before taking action.

Im really glad you posted this because ive been anxious about when my girl becomes a toddler and how I should react to her tantrums...whats the appropriate age to start disciplining a baby?
