When my sister was diagnosed with type 1 she was seven. Her teacher called because she had gone to the bathroom twice in one hour. My mom got the pee strip test things, and when that turned a funny color she then brought some pee to the doctor to test, I think? (I was 9 and this was back in '96, so my memory might not be the best.)

Odd smelling pee is also a symptom of a UTI (I just Googled that because my son has a fever but no other symptoms beyond being cranky).
