Serious question now. Is Charlie just a typical 'learning' one year old is there potentially an underlying issue? I know kids like to push when they're learning their boundaries but this is ridiculous now. I'd say he's been acting up the last 3 or 4 months. I tell him No, move him away and he goes back to whatever it is again, I've tried saying it firmly I've tried shouting I've tried removing him, 3 months on and nothing! He can be laughing one minute then the next have a total meltdown over nothing. You tell him off and he smacks, slaps and bites. I'm tired of telling him off all the time it makes me feel rotten but he already is so naughty. Is this just normal behaviour? He just doesn't seem to learn, you take him away from a cupboard tell him no, he smacks and screams then 2 minutes later he's back at it pulling everything out! 🙄 hate telling him off but he's so naughty 😞

Sounds like a typical toddler to me, all you can do Hun is stick to one method and don't back down no matter what, it is hard but it will get better trust me you're not alone in this, caitlin went through this for months and then one day she woke like a totally different child behaving and all it's weird but all you can do is just push through it xx

@gabilicious, I was pretty sure it was just typical behaviour but with never doing this before I wasn't sure. I hope you're right because it feels like all I do is tell him off all day it's awful- it's that bit worse because he's being told off for messing with things that aren't mine and isn't my house so I can't move them! Just feel rotten as well as it being frustrating that he just point blank doesn't listen. Asking him nicely doesn't work, asking him firmly doesn't work and shouting at him doesn't work so what do I do 😩 x

I know I obviously don't have a toddler yet but maybe when he's being good make more of a fuss and reward him for good behavior more as well as sticking to discipline him when he's naughty- maybe he'll learn that being good is a better way to get more attention? X
Gabi·
Have you tried naughty step, or find out in his cot ? Maybe a reward chart I know he's young but it's worth a try, take each day as it comes it does get better xx

@genieh, I'm always praising him when he does good, even when he takes a drink out of his sippy cup 🙈 (he wouldn't take one until after his birthday), I know all kids go through it, I just hate feeling like I spend my day being shouted at. It obviously doesn't bother him that bad because he does it again a minute later but I always think how sad is feel if I was that little and someone was shouting at me all the time 😩 @gabilicious, I haven't tried that, do you think he'd get the concept of time out/ naughty step? I've thought about it but didn't know if it would be a waste of time at this age cos although he is being naughty most of the time, a lot of the time he is just exploring his surroundings but he's exploring things he shouldn't! X

I don't know Hun but it's worth a try different methods work different for each child but it's worth a try, I know what especially at this stage they're so interested in everything and just want to touch xx

@gabilicious, definitely. Might give it a go for a week and see what happens. Best part is he has 3, yes 3 toy boxes full to the brim with toys. It's only been the last couple of days he's started to play with them but after 5 minutes he's bored and wants to mess. Doesn't help that he has no interest in tv either lol x
Gabi·
How about you hide like 2 of the toy boxes and leave 1 out, when he gets bored of one toy boxed switch it with one of the 2 you've hidden, by the he would of forgotten what toys he's got in it and it'll be like getting a new toy, should hopefully keep him interested xx

@gabilicious, you'd think. He has one in the bedroom, although he doesn't really have access to that as the bedroom is so small it's hard to keep stuff out of reach so don't like him being in there. The other is in the living room and the third, I say toy box it's his ride on fire truck but he's too small for it yet so it's just stuffed with toys 😂maybe I'll switch them though, anything is worth a shot! Half the problem is I think he's fed up of being in and doing the same stuff but with the situation ATM it's impossible to go anywhere other than a park 🙄 x

If shouting/telling off isn't having an effect I'd also suggest time out. He is definitely old enough. 1 minute is all he needs. And with this method there's no shouting. You calmly get down to their level and give them 3 chances. Or choose to count down from 5 for meltdowns. And always always go through with the timeout. At the end of the timeout/naughty corner you explain what was done wrong and do hugs kisses and sorrys. I totally understand the tiredness of shouting all day. It mentally gets you down being that parent. You feel horrible. My little boy is very active. Been walking now for a month and when I take him out, my SILs are constantly telling him off. I find that approach silly, altho he's too young for time outs, I've decided that shouting and even the word No should only be used for things dirty or dangerous. Other than that I let him do whatever. But when we implemented no, it was from 5 months old, as he was crawling and into things, and it was all about eye contact, getting down to his level and tone of voice. Shouting never works with him, sometimes finds it encouraging. It's the tone of voice and eyes that make him stop. Also generally don't stress, kids are kids, just slowly trial and error a method that works. No isn't working so switch to something else xx

@noshinxoxo, that definitely makes sense. If he's messing with somebody else's stuff I don't mind when they're telling him no, but when's he's doing something that isn't harming anyone else/ damaging they're stuff I find it frustrating when they tell him as he just gets confused as to who to listen to. It definitely encourages him too- our tv unit has drawers and whenever he's about to pull it open I tell him no, he smirks at me then points his finger and touches it just to push, tell him no again and still smirks, then when I get up to move him away he gets all excited and opens it and pulls everything out as quickly as possible. I do want to the naughty step/ time out etc I'm not avoiding it just didn't know if he'd grasp the concept. He's not a baby for sure but still only small, at the same time he must have some understand to know to push me bit by bit. Naughty step it is! I just don't want to tell him off all the time, I feel like a bully! X

@jo.wilcox Honestly totally get that feeling. When you have boisterous kids it's so hard. And ofc hun but I'll be honest I do think sometimes we hold our children back by thinking they aren't old enough to understand. I saw the other day someone had potty trained their 10 month old! And I've always thought no way they'd understand till 2 years old. But kids are much smarter than we think and much more malleable. The sooner you implement a method the sooner they catch on. I also hate saying no all day, he's started to tantrum cry at no and then run up and give me kisses and hugs. Lol. They learn so so quickly how to manipulate as well!
Gabi·
Yeah I know what you mean caitlin is the same if we stay in but it's difficult to get out everyday xx

@noshinxoxo, definitely. That's the thing with boys they're so much more rough and their play is totally different I find compared to my nieces. Oh I definitely agree we hold them back to an extent, most likely because they grow so quick we like to hold on to every bit of 'baby-ness' we can. 10 month old potty trained?! Wow that is impressive. Aww that's sweet, Charlie does that when he's being naughty, tries to kiss me as if that'll make me give in. Your boy is so well developed! Charlie's always been quite ahead intellectually but general stuff he was walking the day after his first birthday thank god, can't imagine having a 10 month old running riot 😂 x

As the others have said it all sounds like typical toddler behaviour to me. And as frustrating as it is only time & consistency will get them through it. I didn't find time outs to be effective with Morgan at a young age. It wasn't until he was about 20months nearing 2years that he started to understand. But it may work for some. Otherwise it's repeating yourself a thousand times a day until one day they'll get it! Lol

@sara-lou86, just didn't expect it to hit this soon! Thought I had another 6 months at least 😂 what did you do in the meantime? Just consistently tell Morgan no? I can't see timeout working but it's worth a try, hopefully I'll be one of the lucky ones 🙈 x
