Anyone familiar with fragile x?

My sister has fragile X!

@gabriellerose plz can you tell me what you know. .. nurse accidentally told me b4 doctor did. .. now I have no explanation

@letstalkjoy, is your baby a boy or a girl? And what exactly did she say? Does anyone in your family have fragile x?

She just said I was a carrier. .. didn't tell me gender and no not to my knowledge

@letstalkjoy, my sister is effected slightly more than most girls the side effects of the fragile x for her is autism and anxiety. She got it because my mom caries the gene for it. I do know that symptoms are more prominent in boys (they're effected more severely than girls because they only have one x while girls have 2). But girls symptoms can range anywhere from autism to anxiety and ADHD

@letstalkjoy, okay so that means you could potentially have the ability to give your child the gene for fragile x but it's a little more complicated than that it depends on the number of repeats. I would call & ask how many repeats you have

@letstalkjoy, my mom had no idea that she was a carrier until my sister was 2 and was showing signs so that's when they tested everyone, but my moms had 3 kids and only 1 wound up getting it

My aunt carries the gene too and neither one of her sons got it

@gabriellerose do you know risk factors for boys? Is it down syndrome?

@letstalkjoy, no not Down syndrome they usually have autism but more severely the good thing is if you find out soon enough you can get all sorts of therapy set up to make the best of the situation. Therapy helped my sister so much at first they didn't think she would ever talk, write, or be able to use the bathroom without a diaper. She can do all of that she can read, do math, have conversations, she does not need a diaper. She can even cook and clean for herself she's pretty self sufficient because it was caught early on. And she's a blessing she brings a lot of joy to everyone around her

But remember just because they say your a carrier does not mean your baby will have it. My moms a carrier and me and my other sister are just fine!

@gabriellerose oh your such a blessing no worries any more. .. ironically I'm a mental health counselor and work alot with children on the autistic spectrum. I'll love my baby just the same either way
