LOTUS BIRTH:
Keeping the placenta attached to baby until it falls off naturally, for some this practice also includes sprinkling herbs on the placenta and keeping it in a special container or bag near baby.

Personally I feel it is a huge infection risk but I do see the benefits of keeping it attached so baby receives their full blood supply and remaining nutrients, but for me the risk of infection and possible discomfort it could cause us too high though I love the idea of it, the reality of travel and exposure imposes too high a risk for me to ensure the safety of my child in a more confident manner.

It's not something that I'd choose for myself. However, as a labor and placenta specialist....I have grown to learn, understand, and respect different choices made by different people with different beliefs when it comes to their labor and postpartum preferences.

It's a dead organ attached to a baby with no more benefits than delayed cord clamping. Not something I would do.

The risks outweigh everything.

I did a lotus birth for my baby. It really wasn't difficult, I stayed in bed the whole first week with my baby the placenta in a special bowl nearby, my husband cleaned it and dressed it in herbs up until the 4th day it detached. There are physical benefits to a lotus birth but what's more is the baby has a very spiritual experience with the placenta attached. Currently we still have it in the bowl wrapped in cloth dried and preserved waiting to be buried.
