Q4: @savvyeveryday Could you tell us a little about your experience with extended breastfeeding and how you made it work for your family? #momlifechats
A4: Certainly! I think that the concept is different to everyone. In some countries breastfeeding to 5-7 is normal while here in the U.S. the average is 6 months, and rarely a year or two due to maternity leave and stigma. I personally never planned to breastfeed my daughter past 6 months. I didn’t even know that people did at the time! I just wanted to be able to make it that long if at all since I was worried I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed. But, once we started our breastfeeding journey and made it to 6 months I had a new goal of a year. At that point a lot of people started making comments and telling me to stop, but I wanted to wait for my daughter to wean and could tell that she wasn’t ready yet. So I said we’d stop at 2 . . . but we ended up going to 4.5 years. It was at that point that I was so touched out that I had an aversion to breastfeeding. She was only breastfeeding maybe once a day and at night by the time she was 3 but I had to completely stop it at 4.5. When I got pregnant again she joked that she would take the “eats” from the baby so I was worried that she’d try to breastfeed more. I didn’t even know if I would breastfeed River because I was so put off by the idea because I went too long for me with Savannah, but when he was born I let him do the breast crawl and he did it! We’ve been nursing for 2.5 months now and Savannah has been understanding of it being just River’s milk.
