IV meds are medication like demerol that take the edge off the pain, and can make you sleepy. You will be really heavy headed and dizzy more than likely and you will definitely still feel the pain. The epidural allows you to be completely awake, and take all the pain away. You make experience some pressure type pain from the epidural but it completely numbs you from the mid back down.
Also, for my first born I was in labor from Thursday evening until Saturday morning. They didnt give me the epidural until 10 pm that friday. I felt so much pain I was literally crying and they were giving me iv pain meds. I'd get real dizzy fall asleep and wake up every 2 minutes with a contraction crying. I would recommend the epidural if you want true pain relief.
