Hey mommies..question. Have any of u tried adding cereal to ur young baby's milk? I am a southern girl and almost everyone I have spoken to says adding a itty bit will help them sleep longer at night if u only put it in that one bottle at night. But everywhere online says no because its dangerous somehow like putting too much or inhaling the cereal?? Anywho, my mom had 10 kids n she did it. Family on my hubbys weat indian side did it. I only hear "dont do this its dangerous" by peoole who are not of color which makes me not wanna believe it cuz people of color live a different lifestyle. So lemme kno if anyone has done it and ur thought on it.

Lol that's racist 😂 1m is too little for cereal, period. Their stomachs also have a hard time digesting the cereal. If you really want to try it, pediatricians suggest 4m to start.

When my daughter was a month old she had oatmeal in her bottle at night. I made sure it was the right consistency for her to drink and she is a year old now and is fine

PLEASE DON'T
I am from the south and my mom was told the same thing because I was "always hungry" and she gave it to my sister too...I've read it causes health issues and my sis and I are battling multiple chronic illnesses our families have never dealt with including organ removal, digestive issues and seizures.
If your little baby seems hungry then feed him milk and if he still is fussy it's probably gas. Babies are fussy as a natural survival instinct.

Thnx ladies for responding. Most of you are proving the point I am making. First lemme make sure I note that my point was not a racist one. Please do not confuse me stating a fact that I have noticed with it being racist. I was hoping that we would be able to have an adult back n forth. Um sorry about the age displayed as it has not automatically updated. My lil one is 2 mnths ( not that it is much greater lol). I am sure to hear...pediatricians say this or that is not good). I was leaning on the fact that my mom did for all of her 9 living kids and no issues. Its something that was done back in the day with me n my siblings plus my mons friends with their children. But every single article I read( that I could find, I read) said no dont do it...fact lol. Some things make u just wanna question why are there soo many "no dont do this today" whn it was done back then and it wasnt an issue at all. In the same lane as "only lay ur kids on their stomach, then dont lay ur kids like that, lay them on their back only". I listen but only so much cuz it changes all tha time lol. My lil one lays on both. There is always an issue one way or the other. What could have possibly changed in our anatomy to where its sooo wrong to grind oats into a fine powder and put a quarter of a teaspoon in their bottle? Nothing at all. U know what else I figured out? A lil apple juice(like 3 drops) does help move baby bowels and he slept better that night. But all I kept hearing and reading was dont do that. My momma said to try jus a little. Could ot be that we are programmed? Taught to be afraid of things we shouldnt be afraid of? Its just wild how there are such big differences from then to now. Sorry so long ladies I really appreciate ur thoughts n responses on this. I just really wanted to know others experiences on this.

My baby brother's pediatrician put him on cereal when he was a month old because he had really bad acid reflux. He is 7 months now.
Honestly everyone is going to do best for their babies! You know what is best and if you have a question that is where the pediatrician comes in. My daughter doesn't need it because she doesn't have AR and she is getting everything through my breastmilk.
The point of cereal is to keep them full longer so they are more comfortable
@madukes, you do what you feel is right mama 💗 they don't know what is best for your baby only you do

@lexishai, you are absolutely right. Thnx dor this. I just really dont wanna be one to simply follow for the sake of being like everyone else...thats the worst...especially if i have someone whom i trust more than a dr who jus spits the same stuff to everyone they see.

My niece had to start having cereal in her milk at about 6 weeks. We constantly heard how bad it was from people who knew nothing about her. She has bad reflux to the point of changing her formula 3 times due to the suggestions of others. Finally we figured out to put a little in her milk make sure it's warm enough and only give her a tiny bit at a time so she can burp it up. My mama raised kids, sister raised kids much like you mentioned, the old way. Now there's all this new stuff being said and people wanna take it as fact instead of listening to the ways of the old. Formula isn't the same as breast milk so I find it hard to believe anything that's said about something chemically altered that's supposed to be food for babies. You know your baby better than anyone on this app or online. Do you, mama

Yes you can it will help her sleep longer if that's what you want to do but it's all up to you cause your the mom of that baby and you have to do what you feel is right for your baby cause every baby is different

There stomachs are so little that in reality it doesn't take much to fill them. Yes, I have read that it helps with AR. But on the same note, because you are "stretching" out their tiny belly to fill them longer you are also opening doors for early obesity and digestive issues because they can't break down cereal too well. Also there is a choking hazard. Their airways are so small and it's hard for them to swallow which could cause them to also have swallowing issues too. Baby is only a couple months, it is expected for them to feel hungry and wake up frequently because they are growing and still adjusting to the world. It's just something that comes along with having a baby. Also with the sleeping on the stomach or back, they say the stomach is dangerous because they don't know how to lift their heads too well and could suffocate and if on their back they could spit up and choke on it. I rotated my babies from side to side it also helped their heads from being flat in the back and not having issues turning their neck from left to right, which now they have babies wear helmets for. My babies were the same way, I just stuck it out and eventually it got easier. But each to their own. 😃

Мама дочки (1 год), беременна (28 нед.)
I was told not to because my baby was a preemie... but we were mixing a tiny bit of formula in each of her breastmilk bottles to increase the calories, she was growing on track and sleeping through the night at like 5 weeks... however, my niece, her child was full term, was not gaining properly, or sleeping well because he was having so much reflux... her doctor told her to start adding tiny amounts of cereal to his bottles to make the consistency easier for him to keep down... it worked and he has started gaining and sleeping better! So I'd say it's more about what works for each individual child... and before doing anything, I always consult my doctor... she's great about giving me history about why they now say this and use to say that... then is always supportive of whatever we feel we want to try with our daughter!

Мама четверых детей
All 4 of my boys started at 6 wks with rice cereal. One child had reflux which helped and 2 other had real bad colic which it helped them once I started. But I did very little (baby spoonful) and only the night bottle, they slept better and over all had a much better day the next day. And no my children are not obese or have digestive issues (contrary it helped). Actually my 4 mth old just went in for his check up yesterday and dr said although he was born a preemie he's def not in that range anymore... he's healthy, perfect weight and growing wonderfully. But when in doubt always ask your pediatrician.

Both of my son's were preemies as well.

This is was exactly what I was looking for! Thank u so much ladies. I am totally aware of why people have presented NOT to do it but I just dont wanna go by that the masses are doing it are led by leashes, ya kno? @mcrowell0970, saying southern would not make my statement accurate as I stated it was my mom and her friends who are not all from the south and west indian family which is not the south. This was not meant in that manner. Now what I didnt know about was using cereal for acid reflux so that's interesting. And just for the sake of stating I never said rice cereal either, I am looking more into real oats, toasting it in my own oven and grinding it in my kitchen. Rice cereal is not in my choices at all. @nicoclev, @morrisontrinity247, @dreamermom, @cubanese, @mcrowell0970, @natasha.8235, so many I hope I didnt miss anyone.

@madukes you're welcome. Girl like we said you know your baby better than anyone on this app. If I've found anything to be true it's that everyone wants to have an opinion about your kid and then get mad when it's not the same as theirs. And having an interracial family, I'm finding the same thing, parenting/lifestyle choices etc. ARE different in a lot of cases. It's just a fact. You asked a legit question based on what you know and experienced and people decided to get offended because you made a statement. Keep that baby happy mama =)

@mcrowell0970, I couldve sworn I said that every article I read was saying not to And that they were not women of color. That was factual and in turn confused me. I know that people of all colors do it...i was stating a fact that I noticed. I never saw an article that said do it nor did i see a woman or man of color. Sooooo... thats all.

Woman of color here. 😊 It's not a good idea. Even doctors of color (we had one for years) will tell you that. And I feel you. My mom and grandma and everybody said do it. But it wasn't necessary (we breastfed exclusively and they slept when they slept which sometimes wasn't that much and sometimes was for hours) and the health risks exist. It doesn't mean ALL kids will get those side effects, but you're increasing the likelihood. I think of it like smoking. My mom smoked all thru her pregnancy with me, but then doctors didn't tell her not to. I'm not smoking through my pregnancy because now we know better. Same with the risks. My grandma smoked until she was 96 and died of old age. Never got lung cancer or throat cancer or tongue cancer or any cancer. No breathing issues or emphysema. I choose not smoke because I know enough people who haven't been so fortunate and science proves that smoking causes all of those things. It doesn't guarantee it, just warns you that you're more likely to experience them than people who don't engage in that behavior. I guess it's a risk vs rewards thing for you too. If it's super important to you that your baby sleep thru the night and you're not super worried about the risks you've heard about, then give the cereal. It's not going to be the worst thing you could do. It's just ill advised. Hope that helps!
