So my little brother (15) is being sent to a specialist to get assessed for autism. His teachers called my mom in and said his behavioural problems are very similar to that of someone with autism. I know autism isn't the end of the world, and lots of people deal with it daily. But his dad is such an asshole (beat my mom & was very emotionally abusive to all of us) I know he's going to make Nick feel like shit about it. Autism isn't going to change who he is or make something wrong with him. How do I get him to understand that?

Talk to him and let him know he is still the same kid no matter what and let him know the he means the world to you because if he's being emotionally abused he will feel like he isn't worth anything to anyone so just let him know he means alot to you, you might save his life one day just by telling him that every once in awhile

His dad doesn't live with my mom, they haven't been together for quite a few years. However he still spends holidays with his dad (court ordered) BUT, I'm sure his dad is still not a nice person. I haven't seen my brother in a year (they're in canada) but I'm spending a couple months with them starting in May. I'll definitely tell him that though, he's already being treated for depression and I think feels like there's something wrong with him. He's not very open to talking about his feelings so it's usually just "yea yea I know love you too" @amberjacq

Autism is a diagnosis not a lable. Tell him some people have to whatch their blood sugar and some people have high blood pressure and some people have bad farts and that doesn't define who he will be when he gets older. My step daughter has mental health issues and they slap the lables on her so hard it's pitaful. Educate and embrace his differences. do d what works for your brother. My st daughter has a weighted vest. It works wonders!. Huggs to your brother!

I do t think not telling him is the answer. Because you know that someone in the world is going to and it's not going to be in the nicest way. High school is hard.

I never thought about it that way! That'll probably be a good way for him to understand. Almost everyone has something that doesn't change who they are. We'll just have to work with him on it. And hopefully they'll have ways to help him with his behavior that'll make it easier for him. Of course it has to come up in high school, can't be easy for anyone 😩 @deckroth2001

Yea, last summer his dad was telling him he was a bitch and a pussy because he didn't want to get up at 530am to go for a run.. I don't know any 14 year old that wants to get out of bed, let alone get out of bed for a run. He knows why they aren't together and he always says "I'm never seeing my dad again, he's so mean" and then his dad convinces him that he needs him in his life. We have a great dad now. Has done more for my family and my brother in 8 years than his dad did his whole life, but I guess it's just one of those things. Once he's old enough to choose what to do then it'll be up to him @amberjacq
