Need some help ladies! I keep hearing that if I can make it through the first week of breastfeeding I should be ok. My question is, how I know if I'm producing at all? I have some weeks left before delivery and my nips are swollen and hurt when touched but no leaking. I'm just worried because my mom and sister didn't/couldn't breastfeed

You should be okay! I was concerned about this too bc my Gma couldn't nurse. But they give you prolactin during labor if I remember correctly to help get your milk going before baby comes also here's a link that may help

Call and talk to your obgyn too they can guide you to bfing classes and la leche league to help get you familiarized

I didn't leak at all and had to pump when she was born to get it started and it took her a while to latch correctly but now she is almost 3m and once we got the hang of it she is doing fine and I have plenty of milk.... you should be fine.

@nicoclev, hope it all works out! Bfing is an amazing bonding experience than I could've ever imagined but definitely not easy at all! It will take a lot of patience, hard work, and get ready to lose lots and lots of sleep lol

The first few weeks are the hardest, but when you get past that, it is so worth it all. It is extremely rare to have true supply issues. Most are caused by the mother. You will hear baby swallowing. They don't need much colostrum at all to fill them up and it's super high in calories until your milk comes in. Diaper output is the best indicator of supply, not pumping.

@savannabeardsley I always wondered that especially because I see articles of women who didn't realize baby was hungry bc they were trying to breastfeed and then ended up having to formula feed

Supplementing is only necessary if baby has lost more than 10% of birth weight in the first week. Colostrum is perfect for a newborn baby for the first few days. If you don't put baby to the breast, it won't know to make milk. If you don't put baby to your breast for every feeding, it won't know how much milk to make. Make sense?

It's a supply and demand system!

The Milky Mamas Facebook page is an amazing support group, if you're interested. The admins are lactation consultants and are great at problem shooting.
