I wonder the same thing. I'm scared to get one after seeing my grandfather dig himself in a whole with credit cards.

My Econ teacher once told me to get a credit card and buy things with and IMMEDIATELY pay them off. It'll help your credit score. You cannot forget payments. My husband told me that I didn't need one. Not sure now.

I started off with a credit card and used it only for gas and paid it off as I went.

So here is exactly how to do it. Get a secured credit card, do not allow them to increase it at all. Then when you go get groceries budget how much you have and use the credit card. Take the money out of your account. And save it. Then do again the next week. Try to set the same budget or lower than the week before. Then deposit the saved money in your account and pay your credit card to 0. Do this every week and youll build your credit really fast. But it is so so so so easy to slip and end up with maxed credit cards. So be very guarded. Only for groceries. Good luck:)

@raquely, @twinmommabellahali, I was looking online to see what other people have said and a lot say to get a secured card and only use it for small transactions like gas or groceries. Would those small purchases be not enough to build my credit?

I used my credit card for gas. I knew I would spend $30 a week on gas so then I'd set up an auto payment of about $120 a month.

You don't want to pay it all off all the time though, having a small balance is good for your credit.
