I need advice. My step daughter has been coming to stay with us for over a year now, for weeks or even months at a time. She has had headlice more often then not. My son has never had it because most of the time when she comes I shave his head. Anyway I have thin hair so I've never had it, but is it normal for a little girl to constantly have lice, apparently this was going on before she was coming here as well. Should I be worried that she is not being taken care of at her home? Her mother doesn't even care to tell us that she has lice, she just sends her here knowing there are other kids around her all the time. I'm not sure what to do, I feel like she shouldn't be in her care is she's not dealing with this problem. She also is very far behind, when she first came here she was almost 4 she barely talks she was in a diaper she drank from a bottle and used a sucky. We got her off the bottle, and sucky, and we potty trained her, but she still has a hard time talking, and in worried that nobody is paying attention to her. It seems like the only time she gets better is when she is here with her daddy.

Eeek that's very concerning to me....are you guys in a position to try for primary care and control and try to switch the custody arrangement so that you have her more often? Why does she stay with you for weeks or months at a time? Sounds like you guys are doing her a world of good getting her potty trained and off the baby type things!!! She's lucky to have you

She has full custody of her because when they first split my hubby had a hard time finding a place and she took him to court right away. But before she started school this September she would drop her off, and she just wouldn't come and get her for a month or two, now that she's at school she tries to drop her off every weekend, she even lies to us telling she's not sick, then when she gets her the girls so sick she has no voice and we have a newborn. She has a house because she's on assistance, and we are just saving atm for that so if we fought her I don't think we would win. @brynsmommie,

Ya I see where you're coming from! Usually courts side with the mom but if you wanted to, could you maybe talk to the teacher at school (or get your husband to) and see if the teacher is worried about anything?

You might be able to get advice from the teacher as well as to what to do about the lice

my heart goes out to that little girl. It sounds like they are not cleaning out her room, bed, teddy bears, etc properly so the lice doesn't come back. Everything has to be washed and/or gotten rid of if possible.

I would be revisiting court .. with any letters from the teacher or anyone else in her life can write explaining the state that the child is in. She needs to be with you two .. not her mother for this time being.

Yea I think we will have to do something, this is just too much for me with two kids, and have it to deal with headlice every visit. thanks @tlistboom,

It is concerning. If she's always showing up with lice the poor girl must be very uncomfortable and persistent treatments aren't healthy for her skin, lungs or hair.

The environment she's coming from doesn't sound positive for her or her development

Yea @onlyhuman, we're starting to think she doesn't try to treat it at all other then brushing it out

I had lice only twice as a kid and it was a horrible experience. My mom would pull the hairs out and brush teatree through after any treatment, then tightly French braid before letting me leave the house
