My son and I have been battling a bad cold for almost 2 weeks. He has recently started coughing and it sounds like he has a lot of mucus in his lungs, and a runny nose. Every time he coughs he cries. He doesn't have a fever so I'm not sure if I should take him to the doctor for the second time. The first time I took him the doctor said it was a virus and to let it run its course.

Coughs usually sound the worst when they're productive--when the phlegm/mucous starts breaking up and being coughed out. Steam showers should help--run a hot shower and close all the windows and doors. Sit with him in the bathroom and breathe in the warm steam. Also Vicks on his chest should help.

Once I c my son slightly get something like that .. I give hylands cough med n Vicks on his patas and chest and a humidifier works wonders gone n a couple days
