Yeah if you think she just got use to it then keep making her try without it even if she is frustrated! My favorite thing one of my nurses told me was they need to learn it takes work to eat they can't just get it for free.
@usmcwife that's really encouraging to know you succeeded! and I know exactly what you mean. everyone keeps telling me to use it until I don't need it anymore. which is frustrating since I didn't think I needed it in the first place.
I would say we used it for about a month. I didn't like it but it helped her learn to latch. No one was very helpful for me either. Everyone just kept telling me how great nipple shields were but not how to use them and that I'd eventually have to wean her off of it. I looked up how to get a good latch and just kept trying. For me I had to squeeze my breast and kind of point it up so it would fit in her mouth. For a long time it was painful because she has a tongue tie but now it's fine!
@usmcwife ruby gets IMMEDIATELY frustrated if i offer her my breast without the shield. I was pressured to use it in the hospital because I have inverted nipples but they have since turned out from the stimulation of nursing. I wish I never would have started her on it. how long did it take for her to not need the shield? how long did you try to get her to latch before giving in? my lactation consultant is being incredibly unhelpful. I dont even really know how to latch her to just my breast.
I used the nipple shield for about a month. My daughter had a hard time latching and also has a tongue tie. I was just going to use it until I was done breastfeeding but got so annoyed with it I really started to try everything I could to not have to use it. I mostly just stopped offering it and would hold my breast in the "c" position the whole time she was nursing. I just kept trying to help her no matter how long it took. I would only use it if she got very frustrated. It takes a lot of patience especially at 3 am when you don't want to fully wake up to get them to latch but it is possible! She's 2 months now and can latch perfectly even with the tongue tie. I hope it works out for you!
