How do you use coconut oil to get rid of lice? My daughter is 16 months old and I just found out she has it. I was told coconut oil helps get rid of it. Do I just put it in her hair and wash it out or what? Any advice on getting ride of these nasty bugs is welcome. Thanks

I would Google it, I don't think lice will die from coconut oil though. I would go to the docots to get the prescription cream, you also need to be treated an everyone else in the house. all bedding has to be washed, it spreads like a wild fire. @mama_banks

It suffocates the lice. When my daughter had it I covered her hair in coconut oil & left it overnight. Then in am I would wash her hair with shampoo and pick out nits. Pick out nits daily for a week then repeat coconut oil. Vacuum and wash sheets daily. Bag stuffed animals for a month and freeze hair brushes and such for 24 hours after each use. Heat and cold kill it as well.

@mama_banks hope that helped. Thats what my daughters pediatrician recommended instead of the chemicals.

My family has never used coconut oil for lice. We've always used mayo. Cover the hair in mayo and place a grocery bag over her hair. Let sit for a good hour. Shampoo couches and carpet. Put teddy bears and pillows that can't be washed in a garbage bag to either store for a month or I would just throw them away. Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water. You can also buy spray to spray your couch and mattresses. After you wash the mayo out pick through her hair. You can buy a lice comb to get all the eggs and bugs out of her hair. Boil all brushes in hot water after using them. Good luck. I know from experience with my nieces what a pain it is but if you stay on it before it gets out of hand they'll be gone before you know it.

picking out the eggs is very important!! you can do the strongest treatments possible but it has no effect on the eggs at all. that's how it gets spread at r schools, because parents don't do that part, do a lice treatment and send them back the next day and a week later the lice eggs r hatching!

Listerine. Sounds weird but it works miracles an helps prevent reinfestation. Just put your child in the tub and pour it on their head. It will feel really cold but just make them sit there for about 3 minutes. If your interested, remove one nit before application and another afterwards. You will see that the listerine eats away their clear bodies and kills them immediately. For maintenance, fill a spray bottle with half water and half listerine. Spritz their hair and this will act like a repellant because they don't like the mentholated smell. This is a great way to get rid of these pests without dangerous pesticides. used the original only ..
