Silly question but how soon after your baby was born did u start doing abdominal exercises I have read about how the muscles change etc. I'm wondering if I can hurt anything. my belly stayed somewhat toned I have no clue how since I haven't did an ab workout in 2016 haha no literally I was preg all year. I have been doing cobra and bow poses about 4 times a week but my belly always feels somewhat sore still and my baby is already 2months.

If your abs stayed relatively toned then it's PROBABLY fine for you to start now, however you should not overdo it. At my 6 week appointment my midwife checked my abs to make sure that they had not separated (and mine hadn't). There is a condition called diastasis recti that commonly happens to pregnant women. It's when the large ab muscles separate--which looks weird and can also cause back pain because the abs no longer adequately support the back. In severe cases surgery is needed to sew the muscles back together. I say you need to get back into ab work slowly because diastasis recti can happen after pregnancy if a woman works out her ab muscles too aggressively. The way to check if your abs separated is to flex your abs (like, do a crunch) and feel down the midline of your abs from your sternum to your pubic bone. If your finger doesn't sink in then your abs didn't separate. If only 1 finger sinks in, it's really minor. If you can fit 2 fingers or more in the gap you should go to physical therapy to learn the proper exercises to heal the diastasis recti. My abs didn't separate, but for several months postpartum they just felt kind of soft down the midline, so I took it really easy at first. I got a foam roller (like the kind you use for rolling out your IT band) and I used that a lot. I laid on it the long way (so both my tailbone and neck were on it) and I did a lot of toe taps where I would raise a leg into tabletop and then tap it to the ground. This helps to build all the small stabilizer muscles. Then I moved on to more intense stuff like v-sits, boat pose, teasers and Pilates sit-ups. Whew! That was really long-winded!! Sorry--I hope that wasn't information overload!!!
