If it's to the point of infection (you're running a fever and/or the breast is red and hot) you will need antibiotics, so you should contact your doctor. If it's plugged (painful, swollen and hard) and you want to try and unplug the duct you should take a hot shower and let the water run over it. Or put a hot compress on it (heat a pot of water as hot as you can stand it and dip a small towel in it and put the hot towel on your breast. Then you should try to nurse your baby in "cow pose". Kneel on all fours over your baby with your breast hanging over his/her face and get him/her to nurse from the affected breast. It sounds weird but this is the best way to pull the clog out of the duct. The combination of suction and gravity works great.
yeah it's gotten to the point where I have a bad fever 😞 I've taken a hot shower and then a cold bath it brought down my fever a little and I'm taking tyneol but I'm going to make a doctor appointment in the morning 😃
@Clairerae29 definitely get to the dr ASAP. You can end up very sick from mastitis. Also, you can try ibuprofin/Motrin/Advil to bring your fever down. It's often better than Tylenol and it's fine with breastfeeding. Plus it should reduce some of the inflammation in your breast. You can take 800mg (4 pills) every 4 hours as long as you don't have liver problems. That's the same as one hospital strength ibuprofen
