I put it on safe fruits (ones they had eaten as baby food already for the no known allergy aspect) like an Apple slice. Their mouths weren't so sticky because of the moisture from the apple. And they could hold it and self feed.

I put a small amount spread on a baby spoon or a cracker and let him suck on it. Once he turned one and got used to the texture a bit I started making him PB&J sandwiches.
