Braxton hicks is more of just a tight feeling of the stomach usually not associated with pain, and still able to talk and breathe and move through them where as a contraction will take your breathe away and basically stop you in your track. you may not be able to tell a real contraction in the early stages of labor but as they progress you will know they are the real deal
