And, it turns out that 80% of the moms who participated in the survey have been shamed in some way. 70% of those mothers, were shamed by other moms.

Being in a family oriented and traditional family. I can say from mother to aunts to inlaws telling me how to raise my first child or other annoyances. They know i speak my mind so at times i see the way they try manipulate me. I understand and appreciate their advise but in the end it is up to me. One main issue my family and friends tell me, is that i need to have more kids asap. that my child needs sisters and brother, at least 2 more. excuse me? i am good with one and there is nothing wrong with that. my uterus doesnt need to be a kid breeding machine only, i love my career and plan on going back to school!

I already get the shaming from my mother in law and I haven't even given birth yet, it's annoying and yet she was never a good mother and what she criticizes me on is what she never did.She needs to look in the mirror.

I'm all for stopping the shaming..but I cannot sit and watch mothers ignore cataract safety, use CIO, not strive to at least to bf , feed solids early and put cereal in bottles.. I'm all for the safety of the babies ..

from the beginning of finding out in was pregnant until now (he's 7 months) my boyfriends grandma has been the worst. Even said how horrible I did with breatfeeding and if I really cared about my baby I'd continue, little did she know I went to countless lactation consultants, doctors, and everything and no one could figure out why one week I was ebf and pumping at least 3oz every 4 hours and he ate ever 2 to a week later, he didn't want to nurse anymore and I kept pumping and was barely getting enough to cover the bottom of the bottles. I cried every time I tried to make him nurse and he refused, cried when I saw how little I was getting out, cried when I had to give in with formula. Luckily I lasted 6 months o he could start solids and was at least not solely drinking milk but he had to have milk still and I couldn't provide that anymore. It made me so upset that she had the nerve to say that stuff but never really knew what was happening and I never cared to explain myself because she's just a horrible person in general.

i dont know if this is mom shaming but a few days ago i got into this conversation with my mom and talked to my grandmother about it. i was supposed to have dinner on Saturday with my grandmother but my SO had to work later and i called my mom at work that night to let her know that dinner got postponed until next saturday while my uncle is home for a few days. (and she and my uncle both smoke.) so i was talking to her about how i dont feel comfortable with having William (my 6 week old son today) out there around 2 smokers. (yes i smoke but never never around my son) and she had said to talk to my unlce to see if he could go into another room and shut the door or go outside. ok ill do that on Thursday evening. and so my mom had said that the reason she doesnt come and see him is because i dont allow smoking in my home. and i had called my grandmother the following afternoon to talk about it. and had said that i should bend the rules for my mom and have her smoke in my house. then she went on and said that her brother did it for her sister. so what. im not bending my rules for my mom so she can see her grandson and have her get him sick. after we had moved i made the rule no smoking will be done in my house even though my mom had bought a duplex house. so my SO and i have our own little apartment anyways so i had made the rule about smoking so all smoking is done outside while my mom and my brother who chain smoke like a damn chimney r upstairs while my SO and i have the downstairs. and my grandmother said that it was my fault that my mom doesnt want to see her grandson cuz i dont allow smoking in my apartment. #StopMomShaming Does anyone think im in the wrong about this situation?

I've had family members try to shame me about not giving my babies pacifiers. This summer my SIL really got under my skin when I told her we wouldn't be going to the county fair every day (it's a big deal in our family, she camps there every year for 4H) because our daughter was only three weeks. She said that if she could bring her son (3 months old at that point) who has hydrocephalous that I could bring my baby. I was so upset. I personally didn't agree with her bringing him to the fair because of his age and condition but I didn't say anything because it's NOT MY PLACE. If she wants to risk her child's safety then tats on her. But for her to say I should, in my eyes, risk my child really upset me! The germs and heat are not something I wanted to put my baby through, or me being fresh from giving birth and trying to establish breast feeding. This is only one instance, but it's the one that sticks out in my mind most prominently. #stopmomshaming we all do what we believe is best for our babies and it's no ones place to shame another mom for doing it differently. This does not include things that are dangerous for baby of course.

I agree! But there is a difference between unwanted advice and momshaming. I think we are all a little over sensitive to "shaming". Saying "if you swaddle your baby THIS way, it helps!" Is not shaming. It's advice. I think the younger generation needs to learn that just because advice is given out of experience doesn't mean that they are being looked down upon.

@phinnybinz you're absolutely correct. Helpful advice & mom shaming are two separate things. Mom shaming is someone saying another mother is not a good mother for her actions with HER children.

my SO's parents are always telling me that i need to stop breastfeeding, that i need to get my daughter on baby food, that i need to let my daughter use a walker all the time, that i HAVE to get my daughter vaccinated. They make me feel like a bad parent because i don't parent the way they did over 27 years ago. #stopmomshaming
